Although I did not go to this show, I remember all the attention the stunt got the band. It got VH decent coverage on the news and local rock radio stations like KLOS and KMET that weekend. Years ago, I posted a long and fairly positive review of the show here that I scanned and transcribed to text from the LA Times that I've since lost. I don't think the LA Times writer knew it wasn't the actual band that did the stunt. Not to mention friends that did go to the show all agreed Van Halen blew both Black Sabbath and Boston off the stage. There's a rough sounding bootleg of about 2/3rds of the set that's been floating around for decades.

That "Parachute show" was quite a legendary day in Van Halen history (Sept 23rd, 1978...36 years ago yesterday). Van Halen stole the show at the huge outdoor concert of 56,000 at California’s Anaheim Stadium by hiring look-a-likes to parachute from an airplane into the stadium.

And it was also the day that Eddie met future Van Halen singer Sammy Hagar! Read about it at the link below.

Rare Photos: Also, the link below has exclusive photos of the skydivers & VH running for the stage! Also there's a great shot of Sammy playing that day. A great article!

PR stunt makes sense. I could Roth doing it in his youth. Maybe the bros. But not Mikey

I have a bootleg copy of some of Van Halen's set from this show on vinyl. I think I found it in some hole in the wall record store in Whittier, CA back around 1980.

It's called "Van Halen - Suspicious Performance"

Here is how the songs are listed on the front cover:

    Jamies Crying
I Cant Wait To Feel Your Love
    Im Talking About Love
    Guitar Solo
    You Really Got Me
Heart Attack (This is actually Bottoms Up)

Whoever made the album cover obviously wasn't a big fan of Van Halen or apostrophes.

I can upload pictures of the front and back cover of the album if somebody gives me instructions on how to do it.

Never seen that footage before. I guess I need to sit through and watch all the Roth Shows. Would it kill them to put out a full clip here and there of some of this stuff???

Yeah, I've got the same vinyl. The original issued LP came in a plain white cardboard sleeve with a b/w photocopy style 12" x 12" one-sided insert w/mostly Japanese text that some bootleg sellers glued to the front of the white sleeve. I actually drew a pen n' ink custom cover directly on the plain white sleeve back when I got mine around 1981.
