Default Largo '82 by Art Edwards

I haven't posted here in a long time, but joined many years ago. I watched Largo '82 last night and today searched for information about the show and came across an essay/ article about the show written by Art Edwards in 2012. It's a great read for any VH fan, done well and really in depth.

I searched and could not find a reference to it here, so I apologize in advance if it has been posted before. Here is the link...

The author, Art Edwards, is a musician (The Refreshments) and a published writer.

Nice essay and very well written (I guess it would be if he's an author with his own publishing company).

    however:

no musician has ever eclipsed the singer in aural importance. In other words, no matter how wonderful Eddie is, he will never be a match for the singer of his own band.

I didn't find that an interesting article at all. He describes Alex as a "competent" drummer...strike one...and then even does a paragraph on Dave's sexuality...strike two. Reading about a guy watching a youtube video isn't very compelling, at least not for me.

Yet, if you ask most casual fans, they would probably mention DLR or Sam first over Ed. It is just the nature of the beast. The frontman gets the most attention.
Taylor Swift is nice to look at. Adele can sing.

Emperor Brett - "I can't believe you guys are analyzing song-by-song Van Halen III? What next, analyzing the script of Stroker Ace looking for some shred of Citizen Kane?"

David Lee Roth did the impossible. He made Van Halen better. Deal with it!

possibly/probably true... this guy can't be a 'casual' fan though, writing that much about one live VH show. also mentions how much he liked them growing up etc...

Yeah he seemed much more enamoured with Roth's showbiz shtick than the actual band's performance and brilliant musical mayhem.

The piece started out great I liked the way he appreciated the background vocals and their connection to pop and soul not just heavy rock. But I strongly disagree with his take on almost everything else he said here. Sounds to me like he was underwhelmed by Eddie, Alex and Mike.

I don't know what to make of it.

yeah I couldn't get a great read on if he loved VH or he disliked VH, haha..
He definitely knew lots of nuances and details, and seems to be a fan. But kinda dismissed Alex's talent (along w Ed and Mike a bit).

Like you said.. .he started out pretty strong, but went a little all over the place (praising at times and complaining at other times)

Talking about the drum solo ending with Ed coming back in on guitar

I’m struck by the sheer un-imaginativeness of the whole segment. My fourteen-year-old self could’ve easily written the same script.
well how else were they supposed to end the drum solo? With an inflatable bouncy castle?

    This bit about Eruption tho...

it sounds more impressive than it is.
