Default There's a new "Vacation" movie in the works

Ed Helms and Christina Applegate are starring in the extension of the 1980s classic

Leslie Mann is in negotiations to join the cast of Vacation, New Line's reboot-slash-remake of the classic 1980s John Hughes comedy that starred Chevy Chase.

The movie's casting is heating up as it starts shooting this week in Atlanta. Ed Helms and Christina Applegate are already on board, while Chris Hemsworth and Charlie Day are in negotiations for roles. Chase and original star Beverly D'Angelo are making appearances.

John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein wrote the script and are making their directorial debut in a story that sees Helms starring as Rusty Griswold, the grown-up son of Clark Griswold (Chase) who takes his family on a road trip similar to the one he, his parents and his sister took when he was young.

Mann would play Audrey Griswold, who was played by Dana Barron in the 1983 original. In the update, Audrey is married to Hemsworth's character, an up-and-coming anchorman named Stone Crandall.

Chris Bender and David Dobkin are producing. Marc S. Fischer is exec producing.

Mann last starred in the hit comedy The Other Woman in which she appeared with Cameron Diaz and Kate Upton. The comedy grossed more than $191 million worldwide.

Film studios are all about recognizable brands. Same attitude Van Halen ran into doing cover songs. It's not that this generation can't come up with anything.

In reality if they just made good films, people would come. But franchises are what it is all about.

I watched the Office, I like Ed Helms. I thought he was funny in Hangover too. I think this has potential.

Besides, other than some moments on Community, Chase hasn't been funny in a really long time.

    Caddyshack and Christmas Vacation.

The only times I have ever found Chevy Chase funny in a leading role.

I thought he was humorous in "Hot Tub Time Machine" in the little part he had.

Three Amigos was horrible. I can't stand Steve Martin though.

The first three Vacation movies were funny, especially Christmas Vacation. Vegas Vacation was OK, but no where near as good as it's predecessors. Spies like Us was OK, and Caddyshack was hysterical.

Any Vacation movie done without John Hughes isn't a Vacation movie.

    It just isn't the same.

This. Also, have movie ideas dried up to the point that we are reduced to these endless "remakes."

They're remaking Ben Hur, so yeah, I would say the well is almost dry.
