Default The Full Bug guitar solo -- six-string stretch analysis

I had never properly learned the solo for "The Full Bug" until last night. I may have bluffed my way through it in the past as I've known all of the rhythm parts for decades. But properly analyzing the solo was something I had never done.

Whoa, man! "The six-string stretch from hell!" It's pretty much all in the video. The main key to the crazy-ass lick is using your first, third, and fourth fingers of your left hand on the low E and on the A string, but switch to your first, second, and fourth fingers for the remaining strings. You'll see how it makes sense in the video.

    *E and A string = use 1, 3, 4 fingering; 1, 2, and 4 for D-high E

awesome job Kevin...... I never also have analyzed that solo either and watching you do it really looks and sounds great..... super job.

I have not been playing much guitar lately as I have been working tons of hours and doing a lot of Martial Arts training so guitar has taken a back seat a little however watching you do that makes me want to pick it up again.....

    GREAT JOB!!!!

What a great video lesson , Kevin !
I really like how you break things down to help show what you're doing . You've got the solo and the wide stretch licks sounding spot on and fluid . Kudos - it's a neat yet tricky lead part .

5150Rob - great to see you back , brother !!!
I know what you mean ... things have been getting in the way of my practice time lately too . Cheers

    Thanks guys!!! Much appreciated.

The funny thing is I didn't even really play it right in that first passage in the video -- completely missed a bend -- but that's okay! Because I know for a fact that Edward had NO IDEA what he was going to do in this section. I just know he figured he would do that insane stretch run and eventually end up back at the 12th fret playing something bluesy. A different take and he would have executed the same move differently.

I think when I played it slower, I actually did get the entire phrase note-for-note at least once. I'm sure there is a stray note or two in the TAB as well, but the fun part of analyzing his solos is to just figure out what the hell happened, and then how it happened!

It is definitely an epic run to sit and practice with for a while.

You got it man...TAB is correct as far as I can see. I agree that this was a throw away lead for Ed...the only parts that seem worked out are the little run downs that the bass, drums and guitar do in unison at the end. The rest is just typical Ed "go-to" patterns. I never had any trouble with this one because "Spanish Fly", "Ice Cream Man" and "Take Your Whiskey Home" tunes that I learned first and then I figured out "Full Bug" later. If you know those solos, "Full Bug" is a walk in the park.

That said, I do have to warm up for a bit before I can confidently rip those solos properly without falling flat on my ass!

When I attempt to do these type of Eddie solos, I don't land on my feet after falling down the stairs. I just keep on tumbling like Eddie Murphy's aunt

That is an awesome breakdown, Kevin. Haven't been playing much lately myself, but you just gave me some great inspiration to get it going again!
