    Default Laziest Rock Band Ever?

As we get played again for a number of years waiting / hoping for a new album or even a release of old material, I often wonder if there has been a more dysfunctional / lazy rock band of Van Halen's stature.

Yeah, I'm pissed and tired of trying to figure out why Eddie doesn't like to release or play music these days.

    1) Van Halen - Basically died in 1999. On fire 1977- 1998
    2) Boston - Very little new material when they needed it most - first 10 years
    3) Pink Floyd

Those are off the top of my head.. VH by far at top IMO..

Boston is perhaps the only other band I could say disappointed their fans by wasting time past the point of giving up... well beyond anything VH ever did. Boston's last album makes VHIII and Up For Breatkfast look like Sgt Pepper and Strawberry Fields.

Thankfully VH redeemed themselves, at least in my eyes with ADKOT. ('',)b

I've just tried to cope by looking at it like they retired after 1998. That was an incredible 20 year run. Anything intermittent since then is a bonus. If you look at it like that then the 2 nostalgia tours and the ADKOT album and tour are easier to appreciate. And I love ADKOT, but it's barely a new album in terms of creative energy or reflecting where Eddie is currently musically (to me, I don't want to refight the whole demo thing), I view it like a much better version of Led Zeppelin's Coda. It was made to please the fans, not Ed. And there's nothing wrong with that.

But we really don't know anything right now, they could be on the verge of releasing a freshly written new album, or some sort of career spanning compilation. Or maybe nothing. Who knows? Even if they do get back in gear and finish their career in a productive way it almost just makes it more painful to think about how much potential goodness we lost over the years when they did nothing.

And I don't think there's anything wrong with being frustrated or hoping for more as fans when Dave himself has said several times publicly how disappointed he's been with the inactivity the last several years and he brings up the march of time, too.

"Bottom line, his work ethic sucked".

It's just...... I don't even know what to say. It's like a compact version of all the immense bullshit that has been in almost every Eddie interview ever. I know most people here would not count the results the same in quality being Van Halen fans first, but that's not the point. In terms of work ethic and laziness, it's just laughable to watch Eddie say that. Since they split after Balance:

    Van Halen

    III - 1998
    ADKOT - 2012

4 tours, two for those albums and two nostalgia tours.

No live dvds or albums or anything similar (archive/documentaries).

    Sammy Hagar

    Marching to Mars - 1997
    Red Voodoo - 1999
    Ten 13 - 2000
    Not 4 Sale - 2002
    Livin it Up - 2006
    Cosmic Universal Fashion - 2008
    Chickenfoot - 2009
    Chickenfoot III - 2011
Sammy Hagar and Friends - 2013

And he's released one live album, 2 live dvds, and another live/documentary/archive dvd in that time. And he's also put in work with other projects like the Planet US thing.

Plus he tours almost every year.

And Sammy's about 8 years older! Eddie's quote is just comical.

That's one of the things that fuels my frustration... The fact that Sam gets out and PLAYS MUSIC!!!

He clearly does not do it for money.

He clearly loves to play. I can only assume the brothers do not like to play music live at this point of their life.

    What a waste..

over the past 20 yrs AC/DC have been at a similar level of 'laziness', new album-wise

    Ballbreaker (1995)
    Stiff Upper Lip (2000)
    Black Ice (2008)

    vs.

    Balance (1995)
    3 (1998)
    ADKOT (2012)

they just put out more DVDs, and they seem to do more in-person promo duties for their albums.

Yeah, I mentioned that in another thread and listed several other bands that have not had the same level of dysfunction as VH that haven't released many studio albums either in the last 25 years. You're right, ACDC has released 3 studio albums since The Razor's Edge in 1990. Tons of other stuff though, live and archive stuff.

What's the point of this thread? To shit all over Ed about old stuff that's been beat to death for 10 years?
    .
    .
    .
VH with Dave ('78-'84) - The best years....the "real" VH.
VH with Sam ('86-'96) - Incredible era....."We have renamed this town 'New Halen!'.
VH with Gary ('98) - Fucking disaster. WTF was that??
VH with Wolf/Dave ('12-'15) - Amazing comeback. Smokin' album and tours.

Yeah I know, it's nothing new, but people need to vent. As I said, even Dave has done a lot of the same thing, openly wondering what the hell is going on.

Lazy doesn't even begin to scratch the surface when it comes to describing Van Halen post-1996.

Lets not forget Eddie had a hip replacement Nov. 1999 and had tongue cancer from 2000 - 2003. Then rehab in 2007.

He also had a bout of diverculitis in 2012.

Health issues and addiction will keep you from being that productive. I don't know if you can call it laziness. Geez.

If you've seen Angus lately, you would ask why...the dude looks like he is in his 80's, not the 80's

Metallica should be on that list (Death Magnetic was 2008)..as should G'n'R (C. Democracy also 2008).
