    Default Chickenfoot Revisited

I listen to Chickenfoot on a fairly regular basis as part of my playlists on my IPod, but the other day I decided to give each CD a listen in it's entirety. I am simply impressed with the quality of music these four artists produced for us rock n' roll fans. I probably lean more toward their debut as the best, but I really appreciate the progression of ideas on Chickenfoot III. A combination of tracks from both would turn a great album and a very good album into a stellar, almost iconic album. I think they are that good.

Here's what my combo would look like.

    Avenida Revolucion
    Soap on a Rope
    Sexy Little Thing
    Oh Yeah
    Get it Up
    Down the Drain
    My Kinda Girl
    Learning to Fall
    Turnin' Left
    Future in the Past
    Different Devil
    Lighten Up
    Come Closer
    Big Foot
    Dubai Blues
    Something Gone Wrong

I like the first one best. Sam has such an incredible set of pipes, I am just not the hugest fan of his songwriting style. Hope that isn't seen as a bash.

I love stuff like Feelin', Take Me Back and this little gem, for some reason when Sam goes introspective, I like it. His straight up rockers just come up short to me...I know, opposite of most people on here.

Taylor Swift is nice to look at. Adele can sing.

Emperor Brett - "I can't believe you guys are analyzing song-by-song Van Halen III? What next, analyzing the script of Stroker Ace looking for some shred of Citizen Kane?"

David Lee Roth did the impossible. He made Van Halen better. Deal with it!

My favorite was the first album. I thought III was decent. My favorite songs are:

    Down The Drain
    Future In The Past
    Turnin' Left
    Different Devil
    Last Temptation
    Bitten By The Wolf (Live)

I saw both tours and loved both shows. I thought they sounded phenomenal and put on great shows. Had such a great time at both of them.

But these songs have had no staying power with me. Haven't had a CF song on my iPod in well over a year, maybe two. Don't know what it is but I was so into them and almost over night I lost interest. Maybe I'll throw a handful back in rotation and see if I feel it again. I loved Sam in VH but outside of VH he doesn't do much for me. His voice kind of bugs me.

DD, this may be my favorite CF song. The live versions I have heard are stellar, as well.

"Chickenfoot" was an explosion of ball-stomping sound in your face. Cut n' dried rock and roll.

But "III"? Damn......"III" blew away all expectations. I bow to it.

This is my combo playlist rounding up CF's best songs (IMHO). It just squeezes onto a blank CD-R if you want to burn physical media. I always create playlists with an 80 minute target in case I want to do just that! I tried to put some thought into the sequence and flow of the tracks, while mainly alternating each one between the two albums:

    01. Down The Drain
    02. Come Closer
    03. Sexy Little Thing
    04. Something Going Wrong
    05. Soap On A Rope
    06. Big Foot
    07. Bitten By The Wolf
    08. Last Temptation
    09. Future In The Past
    10. Alright Alright
    11. Avenida Revolucion
    12. Dubai Blues
    13. Oh Yeah
    14. Different Devil
    15. Three And A Half Letters
    16. Turnin' Left

I really liked the concept of Three and a Half Letters. The music on that track is killer and Sam's chorus screams out the frustration and desperation of the sentiments in those letters.

I like the feeling of spontaneity of the debut. I also think the production is much better than III. III sounds much muddier to me. That being said, I think the songs on III are better crafted and I think there are more hooks. Who’s the winner in my eyes? Not sure.

I think I remember you mentioning this before. I know many people that don’t like Sam’s voice. I however don’t know someone who doesn't like his voice but buys the albums. What’s the attraction?

Yup, not liking someone voice is an absolute deal breaker for me. See: Paul Stanley

I said his voice kind of bugs me. With VH I love his voice. Just sounds like VH to me and I guess reminds me of a special time. In the past week I think I've listened to Love Walks In and 5150 about 20 times each and on the treadmill at the gym I've watched Tokyo '89 every time for the past two weeks. So damn good.

But solo Sam or Chickenfoot....I don't know. I just have to be in the mood for him. It's this weird thing where I actually think to myself I'm not in the mood for Sam's voice right now. Lol. It irritates me. That make any sense?

Maybe. I became a Sam fan because of VH. I bought Standing Hampton and VOA while he was in VH and thought they were decent albums but nothing special. After Sam left, I bought Marching to Mars and thought it was an ok album but no where near the caliber of VH. Since then, Iíve become more and more of a Sam fan over the years and I think a big part of that is due to those nostalgic feelings you mentioned. Maybe if I was stuck in the same place I was at with him as an artists in 1997 as I am today, I may feel the same way.

I think Iím confusing myself now.

I'd add the live cover of "Highway Star" to that list:

I donno how could Sam pull off what he did at 2:30, at his age. The whole performance is mind-blowing.

I agree. I would pay to see this lineup again. I think even bad ass Ritchie Blackmore would give a thumbs up to this version of his work.

Yeah. So do I. Big time.

I definitely loved their first album. A really solid, great rock 'n roll album... one that lived up to the expectations (of course, besides Sammy's "ten times better than Van Halen" silliness). Great stuff.

But "III" was very disappointing to me. IMO, it sounds exactly like what I would imagine the leftovers from the first album would sound like. IMO, there's only ONE song on it that holds up to the best half dozen songs on the first album, and that's "Dubai Blues."

But of course I wish them all the luck on future success. Heck, I would think I will like their next album a lot more than 'III.' So, if Michael doesn't happen to rejoin VH anytime soon, (and we know that's not the plan right now) I'd love to have another Chickenfoot album.
