Default This Day in Van Halen History

I'll start the obligatory "This Day in Van Halen History" thread!

    August 28th, 1978:

Photos: Van Halen at the Sam Houston Coliseum—Aug 28, 1980

Enjoy these AMAZING Van Halen photos from 34 years ago today! Van Halen’s performance at the Sam Houston Coliseum in Texas is captured in these photos by Rockin’ Houston. These are extra special because the 1980 tour is probably the least photographed early Van Halen tour, despite how visually awesome the band and stage was.

These photos give us glimpses of some rarely seen aspects of their early shows. There’s some shots of...

    August 29th, 1978:

Photos: Van Halen at the Philadelphia Spectrum, Aug 29, 1978

In 1978, the members of Van Halen were thrilled to be opening for the legendary Black Sabbath. “The Sabs,” as they called them, were part of their musical youth. To share the stage with them was a dream come true.

Ozzy Osbourne, Sabbaths singer at the time, remarked many years later that Van Halen had a profound effect on him. “One of the reasons I left Sabbath was...

The 30th anniversary of this event was actually last week, so it's a bit tardy for this thread, but it's cool!

30 years Ago: Van Halen Plays Monsters of Rock Festival, Castle Donington, England

On this day in 1984, Van Halen performed for 65,000 sweaty heavy metal fans at the ‘Monsters of Rock’ Festival at Donington Park in Castle, Donington, Leicestershire, England. This show was the first Monsters of Rock show out of five the band played to wrap up the 1984 tour. This was also Van Halen’s first U.K. appearance since 1981. The bill for this day included Motley Crue, Y&T, Accept, Gary Moore, Ozzy Osborne, Van Halen, and AC/DC. This Van Halen show was professionally filmed...

I see cameramen in a couple pics.

There is professional footage of 1980 out there and we have proof.

Unfortunately, those photos aren't proof of anything. During every show, the band would have a couple roadies pretend to film the audience to get them all riled up. In reality, they weren't even recording, or at least, usually weren't. That was part of every 1980 show.

    Cool pics, Jeff! Thanks.

It's a pity that large screen that you see in one of the pics only came on during the last tune, when the sun had started to go down.

Donnington Park is a racetrack, and the festival stage was set up in a huge huge open grass area that the track sort of went around. Once inside it you would have no idea if you didn't already know that it wasn't just a huge field. The attendance, as was the case on a couple of occasions in the 80s years, was a lot more than was ever declared - the promoters oversold the festival every year if they could, resulting in the 1988 disaster when a lot of people died in a mudslide crush during Guns n' Roses set (and were being picked out of the crowd during DLR's set, which followed that). I think in '88 they were still supposed to be limited to 65,000 tickets or something, but the crowd was estimated at 100,000+

All that is to say that the attendance in '84 it has always been claimed - for various reasons (safety limits or whatever) - to be 65,000 in attendance, but most news reports of the time said it was more like 95,000-100,000.

Best band on that day, in my view - and I wasn't even a fan - were ... Motley Crue. By the time VH came on it had been a long long day, and even more so when AC/DC came on.

VH were fine, but having a drum solo after tune two, and after 95,000 people had been kind of stuck in a field with no way out and no toilets - they were all fcked up - all day was not a good idea. But, hey, they did that every night when they played - so, yes, if I had a time machine and I could go back and have a word in the band's ear I would say, 'drop the long solos, people have been sitting around all day and you need to keep the tempo up'.

As I remember it, Gary Moore played long and pretty indulgent solos after almost every song, which was truly boring - probably trying to upstage EVH.

Blah, blah, blah. I am so sick of "this day in Van Halen's history." I want music, pics, and interviews in the present. These guys better doing something soon or history is all they'll be--if they aren't already.

    Totally agree , Red !

The old pics are cool and all , yet I'm waiting on the 'new' music and pics that will one day be deemed classic and worthy of a backwards look/tribute .

I won't deny liking a lot of the older stuff though . Neat glimpses from the band's first incarnation . Not better or worse IMO . Just neat ...
