    Default Pots and Knobs

Got a quick question concerning pots and knobs...

How can you tell you are gettingthe right knob to fit over a pot?

For example, I am looking at getting some Bounrs pots but I want to know if the Split Shaft or Solid Shaft will fit regular strat knobs, or the mxr knobs like EVH uses? Also are the long shafts vs. short shafts only regarding LPs?

    Thanks

    Split shaft for fender knobs.

The old MXR knobs have a screw so they are fine for solid shafts.

Split shaft for Fender. Solid shaft for the MXR knob yep.

    You shouldn't need a long shaft I wouldn't think unless you're playing a Paul.

I've had this trouble time and time again- the 'splines' (the grooves on the shaft) come in at least two sizes- one has double the amount as the other- so a knob from a shop here in Aus wont fit on an american dimarzio shaft.
You really need to try them out before buying- I gave up completly and just use mxr knobs now- they have a grub screw that will attach to anything and look "Ed". I can see why he used them- playing cathederal is so much easier with the mxr!
I used to be 'sean112' but lost all my details!

I just like the look of Fender knobs more although I do have a couple guitars with MXR knobs.

I did a Danelectro DC 59 a few years back. It had real crap Alpha pots in it that were scratchy as hell and had dead spots, so I picked up some replacement Dimarzios. The same style split shafts, but the splines wouldn't allow me to use the original knobs as the spacing of them was a little off from the originals...a little fatter too, so I had to drill out the knobs a bit, and they eventually were able to be pressed back on. The pots themselves were awesome upgrades though.
I love the MXR/Fender Jazz Bass style knobs though. They roll real easy in your fingers with the depressions they have, plus they have that kind of industrial tube equipment era vibe that looks cool.
Fender knobs truly have the simplest and best grip of all stockers, but I just find them a little plain Jane looking.
I loved the look of the old big clear acrylic speed knobs...The ones that had the black dial, and white lettering, but they sucked a bit because they were so big, with no taper from the dial, so slower to turn, for doing volume swells, and they were slippery if your hand got sweaty. None of these attributes contributed to "speed" in any conceivable way! They looked cool though!
