    Default Ed's Dark Time

Just finished watching the "Catherine" video again and you could really get a feel of the inner turmoil Ed was going through during that time. So glad that he seems to be in a far better place these days.
'Old Van Halen, when I was in it-classic Van Halen-makes you wanna drink, dance and screw, right? And the new Van Halen encourages you to drink milk, drive a Nissan and have a relationship.' - David Lee Roth.

The song and video are haunting, as was this entire period in Ed's life. I am truly surprised, and very thankful for his family, that he is still alive.

Such an awful year. His interview with Howard Stern was like watching a train crash in slow motion. It is excruciating to listen to because the question becomes "Did he truly believe his own bullshit?" Because Howard and the others were really, really drilling him about his outrageous self-diagnosis and his proposed ridiculous non-medical "cure".

After the interview was over, Howard took a caller. This was their exchange:

Howard: Jeff, you’re on the air in Portland. . . .

Jeff: You know, I think Eddie is one of the most brilliant artists
this country has, but when exactly did he lose his fucking
mind? [Laughter.] Oh, my God. That interview scared
the shit out of me! [Laughter.] I love Van—Van Halen
is, is, is the most incredible rock band that I think has
ever come around in this country, and that scared me. I,
I, I’m dumb-—I sat here dumbfounded for that whole
    interview.
    It was awful.

So much craziness. I am still surprised Eddie made it out of that period alive. Some of the worst footage of the 2004 tour doesn't seem to be on youtube anymore. There was a clip of Best of Both Worlds from that tour that I remember showing to many friends. It was just so unbelievable. Indescribable.

It's a good thing Eddie is such a recluse, I think if people had seen more of him during that time they would be shocked out of their minds.

I read all of Sammy's book and in spite of people saying he was hard on Eddie I think it was just the opposite from everything I saw during that period. Between the 2004 tour and the interviews and anecdotes like this one, I believe Sammy when he said he went easy on Ed:

ZAKK WYLDE: 'EDDIE VAN HALEN Hasn't Just Gone Off The Deep End — He's Living In Atlantis'

Having to bury his partner in crime was tough enough, but Wylde also had to contend with the bizarre behavior of one of his guitar heroes, Eddie Van Halen, at Dimebag's funeral and memorial service. "I don't know what the hell happened to Ed," he lamented. "He hasn't just gone off the deep end — he's living in Atlantis! I couldn't get in a word without being interrupted by him. If I mentioned God, he'd say, 'There is no God or Jesus, only yes or no.' It was like he thought the whole thing was about him. He wasn't thinking about Dime, or even Vinnie and Dime's old lady, Rita, for that matter. He did put his original black-and-yellow guitar in the coffin with Dime, though. That was cool."

    Read more at http://www.blabbermouth.net/news/zak...EG3UScs8eir.99

    From a fan account:

Afterwards, Zakk Wylde came out with none other than Eddie Van Halen. They then proceeded to argue over the microphone… Zakk kept trying to say a few words about Dime only to be continuously interrupted by Eddie. Eddie, you could tell, was a little drunk, which surprised me.

So glad it's all over (I hope) now.

Just looked and I still can't find that BoBW clip. But for comparison, this video of his solo in 2007 is outstanding in comparison. And considering this is so bad it's like one of those "shreds" mockups that's really saying something.

Afterward, Andy Greene wrote an article about the interview for Rolling Stone entitled “Eddie Van Halen Goes Bananas on Howard Stern”.

Not the kind of publicity you want. Ever.

And we wonder why he's so quiet and give so few interviews these days... I do think he learned that old saying the hard way: "Better to be a questionable fool in silence than to open your mouth and remove all doubt."

agreed. Glad that Eddie made it back from the edge. I couldnt imagine having to see him live like that on a day to day basis. Ed is lucky that he had a support system that pulled him out of that mess.

    This thread is depressing.

So frustrating to reconcile all this (many years ago, of course) with being a teenager in the 80s (graduated in 1986) and growing up thinking Eddie was the very picture of fun and happiness. The fun upbeat songs and the humor in both the songs and videos and his always present smile. I obsessed over Live Without a Net and my first guitar was a Kramer Focus (which I still have) simply because I wanted to have something as close as I could get to Eddie's.

But the reality is that he's a very dark person. Bitter, petty, jealous, insecure. Always has been. Almost never complimenting other musicians unless in a backhanded kind of way. I know we're talking about this particular horrible period in the early-mid 2000s but he's always had those traits I mentioned. I could see where Dave might get obnoxious to be around for a long time but I've never gotten any impression that he's an angry person like Ed.

I thought he was the kind of guy everyone would want to be around. But man, even when I see interviews from the 80s like this one I just think "Man, what a dick". The guys next to him are clearly embarrassed.

Having said that I do think his son has had a major impact on him and regardless of what's going on with the band Eddie does seem grounded and happy now more than ever. And that's just plain awesome.

it's weird. i just listened the Stern thing... and yea, Ed is strange and all. but not nearly the horrible trainwreck i expected reading this thread first.

insteresting hearing them talk about Wolf before 2007.... and how EVH was working on a "solo album" with just EVH/AL/WOLF.... wish that got done.

but yea, when they ask if Hendrix is good, he just says "well, he had lots of pedals.... i couldn't afford that stuff..."

i mean, it's one thing to say Hendrix albums aren't your cup of tea or whatever, or even perhaps that his legend is slightly overrated since his death (i love jimi and dont think that, but it's not unreasonable) but to give the impression that Jimi wasn't all that great (or the EVH never used effects/pedals!?!?) is kinda odd.
