Default Where would VH be right now if they had continued with Gary?

I'm sure this has been discussed before, but had the band continued on with Gary after the 3 tour what do you think would have become of VH?

I'm sure Gary would've eventually come into his own. They'd possibly be reduced to playing smaller amphitheaters and what not. Ah, so many what ifs.

Well, just look at where they were playing at the end of the VH III tour: small theatres/House of Blues type venues. I can't see them improving much on that unless they strung together some hits again. Based on their output with Gary, that doesn't seem likely. While people have said things may have been better with their second effort, it's telling that there was a mutual parting of ways during the early stages of the second record. They all knew it wasn't working.
CNN may think my opinion matters, but you shouldn't.

Didn't Mitch Malloy say, he knew once Dave was trotted out on MTV, no other singer would be accepted? Gary should have known that as well. One and done is what that collaboration deserved.

I have no idea. It's tempting to say that Gary would have won people over with more time and records but for me the music itself on VHIII is a bigger problem than the vocals. Also, it seems like for the most part a replacement singer either hits it off immediately or never does. Look at Brian Johnson with Back in Black or Dio with Heaven and Hell. Heck, even the people who don't care much for Sammy in VH still seem to think 5150 is the best VH album with him.

Also, apart from the new singer and chaotic music (to me at least), VH III came out at a time when almost all rock bands of their era were just no longer welcome in mainstream music. I think no matter what they did or how much better a second album might have been their popularity would probably still have gone downward. Most other hard rock or metal bands of their era that had previously also been successful on top 40 radio had fallen even more than VH (like Def Leppard) or completely changed their style to adapt (like Bon Jovi) or else never depended on radio as much anyway (like AC/DC and Metallica). Lots of other major bands that had been successful without much pop radio success were in disarray. Iron Maiden was without Bruce Dickinson, Judas Priest was without Rob Halford and back to playing small venues, Rush was on hiatus and seemingly defunct for 5 years from 1997-2002. Not that VH is similar to all those bands but they do share a lot of fanbases and the whole idea of guitar driven rock (for the masses anyway) was just in hibernation. And more than most of those I listed VH always had one foot in pop music.

But hey, we went 14 years without a new album, even more failed experiments would have been more welcome than NOTHING.

Maybe Gary did know that, but he just wanted to be in Van Halen. Shit, I would join Van Halen even if they told me the entire new record was going to be Al farting on a snare drum.

Pretty similar to where they are now imo. Mike still gets the boot. Wolf is in. Maybe another Cheroni album. 2 or 3 tours and no news is good news BS since Balance.

A power trio that only played in 5150. Ed, Al Wolf.

I'd pay $9.99 for that way before I'd pay $9.99 for the WWE Network which you can get for $9.99, that's right I said $9.99 .
(Those that have been paying attention to RAW lately will get it.)
