Default Early 80s classic guitar part homages (non-VH)

For nothing but simply organic reasons, I've been really picking up on some great little but mostly simple and awesome guitar bits from some classic early 80s MTV-style music. I suppose BOB FM is possibly to blame.

But I can't be the only guy that finds these particular few tidbits cool as all hell. And of course the chorus pedal plays a massive role.

Here are bits from "Run to You" by Bryan Adams, "Jenny/867-5309" by Tommy Tutone, and "I Think I'm in Love" by Eddie Money. All of these songs have very similar themes -- suspended notes and stereo chorus. Oddly, "I Think I'm in Love" is tuned down to E flat.

I will keep up with some others that I find just as classic and post more, but I'd also love to you hear any of you guys cherry-picking interesting guitar parts from the occasionally great (or pretty good) early 80s rock/pop/MTV songs. Request them or post yourself playing some classic stuff!

I would be surprised if the garb did anything but laugh his ass off that I like some of this stuff. If he or anyone else can find influential value in that somewhat odd era and type of music, bring on all the love from everyone!

Well- to tell the truth I'm a bit of an 80's lover too- I wouldn't mind hearing 'My best friends girl' by the Cars- I've always wanted to work it out but never did.
They were a bit corney but the Cars had that ability to write tunes that stuck in your head!

Corny? Kidding me? Elliot Easton is a tone master! His is almost up there with the Brown Sound.

I love all those tunes Kevin!
The Cars are awesome! Easton is a monster player!! That's 1970's though. If we're going into the 70's as well, I've got some more.

Some I've been wanting to learn..or you might wanna mess around with.

The Outfield- Say it isn't so

Oingo Boingo - No One Lives Forever - The "Boingo Alive" album version. They reworked the entire Dead Man's Party record with more emphasis on guitar. Killer! Bartek ,does some great guitar work on the song, and record.

Amazingly, there isn't a vid on YT for this version....weird. The Dead Man's Party version is good, but not as good as this one.

    Hmmm..what else?

    Jessie's Girl

Men at Work - Overkill- Love that solo

Straying of the 'pop' angle...I'd love to learn Rainbow's, Stone Cold...Ritchie burns on that one!
Some of the Billy Idol stuff too...like Dead on Arrival. Stevens was killer back then.

About the only musical thing we ever disagreed on was Rush! Of course I love all that pop stuff! You can't be a Van Halen fan and not dig pop, 'cause that's exactly what Van Halen music is!

I was lucky enough to see this today. Christopher Cross did an in-store appearance at a local music store in Austin promoting his new album. It was a short set of new songs, but he did play "Sailing" and it was effing awesome:

Inspired, I came home and learned it.

I think it's an amazing bit of guitar work, an incredible arrangement of interesting chords -- I might maybe possibly hear a bit of Ed's clean guitar work in some of this.

    Huge fan of Christopher Cross.

    Here's some VH related info,

Nicolette Larson sang on his 1979 album.

    It's a classic!

I think a lot of that may be that this is based on major triads played on an electric 12-string. It does sound an awful lot like the unplugged & mic'ed/direct Rickenbacker electric 12-string on "In A Simple Rhyme" and the Gibson EDS-1275 heard on "Secrets". After seeing your video I tuned my '66 Fender Electric XII to open D and played along with the 1980 live version from The Midnight Special and it was spot on. I also played along with the record and I think it was recorded on either a Fender Electric XII or on his custom Fender Electric XII/6-string stratocaster double-neck that you see on The Midnight Special and the other TV appearances he made at the time.

Brilliant song...I used to play this on a six string acoustic with a great girl soul singer friend of mine. We copped the arrangement from Angie Stone who had done it live for many years.

Neil Giraldo IMO was very underrated with the riffs and solos he had.

    Loverboy had some good riffs

Always thought the breakdown in Eyes Without a Face was simple but very cool sounding

I said I'd do a clip of the guitar part from "Sailing" too and I have! Here's my first recording using my '66 Fender Electric XII...it TOUGH to play this guitar with the cramped fingerboard and the truss rod can't be adjusted any further so the action is quite high...which is to be expected with a 48 year old neck

I may actually get a brand new replica neck just so I can have a fully adjustable truss rod, but that is a pain in the ass and more money that I don't have. Something went wrong with my YouTube upload and the video doesn't match the audio for some reason...I'm still trying to get better at making clips but I don't know what the hell I'm doing!
