Default what is that 'back to the future' EVH clip?

I have never seen a satisfactory answer to this question... what is the clip of EVH playing guitar that Marty plays to his dad in the walkman on Back To The Future, on the cassette that just says 'Edward Van Halen'?

I've only ever seen it being vaguely referred to as music from the Wild Life Soundtrack. well I've seen the whole film Wild Life and it doesn't appear anywhere iirc. not heard it on any of the full 'Wild Life' tracks that have been released recently either. it also sounds totally different to anything on the soundtrack which is more like incidental film music (duh...)

I'd kill to know what it is, cause it was this 10 seconds or less of music that got me into VH in the first place. at the end of the clip you hear a hard rock riff come in + drums, for about 3 seconds, which sounds like it was the intro to a track. what is it?

This clip is exactly what got me into VH as well! Thanks to Jeff at VHND, here's the story and the full piece...

"Out The Window" is a short (but epic!) piece of music ... or rather, guitar squealing ... written by Eddie Van Halen. This is from the musical score from the movie, 'The Wild Life', released in 1984. Eddie wrote the entire musical score. Eddie on guitar and electronic drums. We named this piece “Out The Window” because the main character has to jump out of his girlfriend’s bedroom window to escape detection by her parents.

This piece was also used in Back To The Future", when Marty McFly (Michael J. Fox) travels back in time and pays a visit to his sleeping father (Crispin Glover). Marty McFly, wearing a radiation suit, pulls out a cassette tape labeled "Edward Van Halen." He places it into a Sony Walkman, straps the headphones onto the unknowing ears of his science fiction loving Dad, and cranks it up, effectively scaring the living daylights out of his father, who upon seeing the young McFly is convinced he is a space traveler from a far off galaxy.

YES! that has totally made my day. been searching for 27 years for that lol. shame it's not a full length track or song,

I guess if I'd checked all the Wild Life youtube uploads I would've found that, but I swear it doesn't appear anywhere in the actual film?

    Kudos

Agreed on wishing it was a full tune! Both this riff and "Growth" from WACF have a ton of potential, I'd love to hear full versions of those tunes.

As for where it is in the movie: I haven't seen it, but the VHND article says its when the main character is jumping out of his girlfriend's bedroom window.

I felt the same way after that scene in Back To The Future! Always wanted to know the story until VHND uncovered it.

Here is a montage of clips from the movie that has the Out The Window scene in it...

Minor NSFW warning on that by the way!

Too bad the movie sucked, so bad it's impossible to watch to find where this plays....although IIRC doesn't Ronnie Wood make a cameo in this?

yeah, guess I must've fallen asleep by the time the above clip comes in. it's such a typical mediocre 80s TV Movie style flick that I'm surprised Valerie Bertinelli doesn't star in it - although weridly it does have Lea Thompson who played Marty's mom in BTTF

It also has Eric Stoltz who was the original Marty McFly before Michael J. Fox replaced him.

Growth is awesome, I really wish they had expanded on that. I've always wanted to just sit down and see if I could turn it into a whole song.

I love The Wild Life! Great music from Ed and others...great teenage fun just like it's predecessor 'Fast Times At Ridgemont High'...nothing as PERFECT as angelic topless Phoebe Cates, but you do get to see Kitten Natividad's giant rack

Yep, BTTF is an outstanding movie - a classic of its time and genre. I must admit, seeing it described as "lame" did cause me to raise an extremely quizzical eyebrow!

I'm hoping/praying he was referring to The Wild Life as lame...because in my opinion calling BTTF "lame" would be grounds for VHLinks ex-communication.
