Default A Different Kind of Truth - Revisited

Well, it had been several months since I popped in A Different Kind of Truth. How I felt about it then, and what I feel now are still the same: It's a great album, worthy of being part of the Van Halen discography.

I listened to the whole thing - start to finish. My favorite songs on the album have always been She's the Woman, As Is, Stay Frosty, and Outta Space.

What I loved about taking a break from it and coming back is that I found myself giving a "fresh" listen to You and Your Blues, Chinatown, and Bullethead. And the f*ck if I didn't just play 'em twice that day. I was driving way too fast during Bullethead. That song is harmful to one's health...

There are no "C"s on the album. All "A"s and "B"s. It reminded me of what a triumph it was for the band to come back like that. It doesn't matter, because I know that I love it, but you can't find a negative professional review of the album. The rock world sat up, took notice, and proclaimed loudly, "Finally" after not doing much for more than a decade.

All of this has really made me crave more new music. I can take a break from the touring...I just want more. Maybe the project is a box set with unreleased Dave and Sam stuff, and just a few new tunes. Fine! Whatever man...maybe they will release a song on a website or I-Tunes one at a time. Okey Dokey. Just start putting stuff out there. We'd all love to hear it.

I just threw the disc in this past Saturday. First time I've listened to it beginning to end since probably spring. Still love it. She's the Woman, Stay Frosty, and Outta Space are still my favorites. And I still don't like HBSD. I don't like frantic. That's what that song is to my ears. VAN HALEN!

I can't really put into words how much I love this album. I was beyond blown away when I first heard it, and that jaw-dropping feeling never really subsided much. It's my favorite album in I don't know how many years! Probably my favorite album by any band in over two decades. I figure that a solid 10 or 11 out of the 13 songs are amazingly good, which is just as many great songs as their other albums have. (And even more great songs than some of their other albums).

You are correct about it having pretty much NO negative reviews from critics. And as far as fan reviews go, the majority were 5-star, followed by 4-star, and then very few 3 or 2 or 1-star ratings. I think that every single person who gave it 1-star or 2-star rating is simply a disgruntled fan (from Sammy/and or Mike not being in the band anymore). Because even with the absence of those two people, there is no way that someone who likes VH would honestly not like that album.

And I don't give a shit that some of the music was written long ago. In fact, that was a fantastic move. That was a positive, not a negative. They might be crazy enough to still hold off on releasing old concert footage and audio recordings, but at least they are were wise enough to finally officially release some of those killer unreleased songs that were too good not to put out.

I still listen to ADKOT and still love it. My favs are She's the Woman, Blood and Fire, Bullethead, Trouble With Never, Outta Space, and Stay Frosty. The best solo on the album is on Big River.

Jeff...I totally agree about the old stuff. It's theirs. It had never been officially released. It adds to the mystique of the entire album. ALL GREAT!

I know I'm in the minority but I still don't care for it. Some bright spots but nothing I want to hear over and over again.

It's a really good album that you can't believe was written and recorded by 50+ year olds.
One of the better comeback albums that I can think of.

Mike's harmonies are missed, and DLR trying to fill the high vocal space just doesn't sound good, and Al's drums are a little too low in the mix for me (I would assume this is because they have so many channels used up by the bass), but overall there really isn't much a VH fan can complain about, especially a DLR fan. For some reason him and Ed just seem to come up with their best stuff together. Not that they haven't written great songs with Vai, Becker, John 5, Sam, Cherone, etc., but they just seem to push each other.

A good chunk of it rates up there with some of their best material in my humble opinion.
Taylor Swift is nice to look at. Adele can sing.

Emperor Brett - "I can't believe you guys are analyzing song-by-song Van Halen III? What next, analyzing the script of Stroker Ace looking for some shred of Citizen Kane?"

David Lee Roth did the impossible. He made Van Halen better. Deal with it!

    Preferred pronouns: he/him/his

I still love the album as much as ever . A brilliant and breathtaking comeback on a few levels . I don't play it as much as I used to , but I can say that for lots of my favorite cds .

Yes , I said it ... ADKoT is one of my all time favorites . Can't say enough good things about it .

Personal best tune vote goes to "As Is" . I like every song on the cd , although "Bullethead" is at the bottom of my own list .

The only, and I mean only, reason that I don't listen to it more often is because it crackles in my headphones. I listen to 95% of my music only on the phone or pad. The volume is always maxed out. Almost any music, including Van Halen, Lorde, whatever, released in the last few years crackles in my headphones at that volume. It's irritating as hell.

And I love Honeybabysweetiedoll. The As Is-Honeybabysweetiedoll combo ranks among their best work. That ear-piercing screech/scream that Ed gets during Honeybabysweetiedoll is worth the price of admission for me.
