The hypothetical Sam and Dave VH tour...

OK, guys, fillin' time for fun while we await real news about new VH activity. Take this thread with a grain of salt, as we acknowledge that the likelihood of this ever happening is slim to none (and none lives in Japan )

Imagine what the set list would be like for a Sam and Dave combined tour with VH. Here is my take:

The Best of Both Worlds Tour

Set 1: Sam, Mike, Ed, Alex
    Best of Both Worlds
There's Only One Way to Rock (yep, throwin' a bone Sammy's way)
    Love Walks In
    Poundcake
    Humans Being
    When It's Love
    Top of the World
    Dreams
    Right Now
    Why Can't This Be Love?
    Finish What Ya Started

    Guitar Solo
    Drum Solo

Set 2: Dave, Wolf, Ed, and Alex
Hot for Teacher (right out of the drum solo)
    Unchained
    She's the Woman
    Runnin' With the Devil
Me Wise Magic (oh yes I did)
    Ice Cream Man
    ...And the Cradle will Rock
    Beautiful Girls
    Pretty Woman
    Ain't Talkin' 'Bout Love
    Panama

Encore 1: Dave, Mike, Ed, and Alex
    Jump

Encore 2: Dave, Sam, Mike, Wolf, Ed, and Alex
    You Really Got Me

    Thoughts?

    Fire Away...

They are all on stage for every song and Dave, Sam and Gary sing every song as a trio in unison. That's every song on every album starting with You Really Got Me all the way to Beats Workin.

There. 8 hour set, from 4 till midnight.

    p.s. no I'm not serious.

This all sounds about right. Except they'd have to drop a few songs since they're all old as fuck and that's a long show.

I used to think this would be cool.

I now have no desire, to see a tour featuring all 3 singers. It would be cheesy imo...

obviously this will never happen, as you said.... and therefore any hypothetical setlist looks fine/good to me.

BUT.... given the popularity of bullshit like American Idol and The Voice and all related "reality" shows involving talent contests.... (i hate 'em all, but i admit they are "a thing.")

who other than Diamond Dave could pull off being the Emcee/Host of An Evening With Van Halen. with Sammy and Gary (and Mike) as special guests... the band goes thru a full show of hits, favorites and deep cuts, but instead of splitting into "sets" with each singer, they just mix it up.... have Dave start off with a song or two, use the drum/guitar solos as transitions, bring Sammy and Gary on/off a couple times, and let Dave sing one or two in between (keeping his voice/wind fresh). and Dave can do all his Dave stuff, bullshitting between songs and introducing everybody. and then, part of the tour would be that all the cities would be having contests months in advance to be the FAN HALEN guest singer. so people would (thru radio or the venue or whover) compete with other locals somehow, and then the winner in each city gets to sing ONE song with the real VH at the show.

it would be corny as hell, and not my first choice of format for seeing VH again... but it would generate some buzz and they could pull it off.... and, for better/worse, one thing VH is very famous for is changing singers.

You Really Got Me is a cool choice as the final encore with both Sam & Dave chiming in.

However, I could think that Sam would rather want to go for some heavier songs to keep the pace up and the crowd jumping.

Put Judgement Day in there instead of CSLY, and Feelings as the last Sam song before the encores.

Van Halen is a nostalgia act now. Casual fans only want to hear the hits. I know that's not us, but I am just saying.

I saw VH twice in 2012 and fans only stood for the opening song, YRGM, ATBL, Jump, Panama, and HFT. Seriously. I pissed a lot of folks off because I stood the whole time jamming my air guitar, bass, and drums, while singing at the top of my lungs (to help out Dave, of course).

I kept my list to things that they have been doing of late (obviously Sammy on his solo tour).

CSLY was the next song in for me; I also thought about Summer Nights, and a personal favorite - 5150. Don't Tell Me What Love Can Do was another one that I thought of.

But... to keep it real, I looked at what they played in 2004 and used that as a base (hence Humans Being).

I like the Dave as MC idea - he certainly has the onstage persona to pull it off - but I thought having separate groups, with the original 4 reuniting for the encore would be really cool.

I did leave Gary off... 'nuff said there

Last, I considered having each singer sing something from the other's catalog. Sammy could easily do ATBL, for example. But when I got to Dave... ???

The magical day of the first "3 Tenors Van Halen Tour" has arrived.

Tension fills the air with anticipation from the unbelievable reality of the first night of a tour no one thought could ever happen on this momentous night at the illustrious Madison Square Garden.

The lights go down. Darkness for what seems an excruciating eternity...

    The opening...

A lone keyboard bass note is heard

The keyboard sounds of "When It's Love" ring out on a dark stage...

Sam and Gary walk out to a tight spotlight centered on a dark stage.

Lighters come out from the audience as they sing the first verse in beautiful harmony...

Tears of emotion flow from the eyes of the crowd (yes even the vhlinkers.. you know who you are.) The lighters of the crowd are now waving to the tempo of the anthem.

SUDDENLY, out of nowhere, the lights from behind the drum riser fade up to reveal the silhouette of a figure. That unmistakable guitar rips through the air... The previous song is completely obliterated by the rest of the band kicking into "UNCHAINED" as a full-body-tattooed DLR flys through the air, off the drum riser into a mid-air split... waving a scarfed samurai sword who beheads the other two singers in true Tarantino "Kill Bill" style... blood flies everywhere... as Dave launches into the verse...

Complete of-the-hook, rip-roaring pandemonium kicks in as the fans erupt into a deafening cheer sending the meters on the soundboard to completely go dip into the red.

By the second verse the stage (and bodies) is overrun by the fans overwhelming security.

Dave and Eddy conduct the crowd while hanging suspended from the lighting rafters swinging over everyone (ala Panama) ...

Ed's guitar solo is a rapturous moment .. and just when things couldn't build any more... Michael Anthony appears at Wolfgang's mic and joins in on the backing vocals for the final chorus.

The structural integrity of the building is suddenly overwhelmed by the vibrations and out of the control crowds... the building collapses causing a chain reaction domino effect, sending the world into chaos ... the stock market roller coasters .. temperatures are out of control, earthquakes and hurricanes appear from nowhere, volcanoes erupt... Pakistan panics and launches a nuclear missle attack on Toledo... the world is in complete ruins...

    Silence...

Then... slowly arising from the ashes... DLR climbs out of the ruins...holds up a pair of panties and says with a sly grin... "I like the way the line funs up the back the the stocking.."

Alex's slams the drums to jump-start "EVERYBODY WANTS SOME"... sending the space time continuum into full reversal, restoring the land as it once was allowing the band to finish the show... ending with a sing along of Stay Frosty broadcast live around the world...

Israel and the Palestinians make peace... scientists suddenly learn the secret that music is the renewable energy source they've been looking for all along ... dogs and cats finally live together in perfect harmony... the lamb lies down on broadway... world leaders provide every earth inhabitant a DVD/BluRay/downloadable copy of the entire concert with a pair of Red Striped™ EVH™ Flip-Flops™ (in conjunction with the VH Store) ...

And last but not least... the seal is broken, and peace breaks out on the VHLinks boards.

Sorry, you were talking hypothetically, right?

Cheers brothers and sisters on vhlinks.

Wow, that sounds like some lame people! I've seen many shows on the last two tours and I looked over the crowds often. Finding people that are sitting down (at any point of the show) at the shows I've been at was very hard to do.

But as we rock fans get older, crowds, in general, get more lame. I just went to Kiss & Def Leppard - now THAT was a lot of people sitting, especially during DL. And lots of people taking shitty videos and photos on their phones, and even texting and posting their awful videos and photos on social media. Just stupid! And a lot of people are out of shape and don't like standing for three hours and feel they need to sit part of the time.

But at the same time, I spotted a lot of people who were on their feet the whole time and obviously having lots of fun, so it revived my faith in humanity, lol...

If a tour like this started in Toledo, it wouldn't make it to Cleveland.

Sings like a bird. Rocks like a pig.
