As soon as I heard this, I thought of that other ill fated record attempt when some father decided that it was a good idea to have his 7 year old child become the "youngest" (ie most inexperienced) pilot to make some kind of journey.

That one ended in tragedy as well...she would have been 25 years old right now doing who knows what, but she ended up dead in a plane crash in Colorado

and Abby Sunderland the 16 year old who was trying to be the youngest to sail around the world solo and ended up dismasted, and stranded in the middle of the Indian ocean needing rescue.

what is with these parents who push their kids this way? These are dangerous activities, the kind of thing a young person may dream of, but isn't it the parents responsibility to protect kids from their own sense of immortality
