Default I HATE the terms "Van Hagar" and "classic Van Halen"

I really do hate when people use these terms. Hate it.

I know Sam uses it but I wish he wouldn't.

To me VH put out incredible music from 78-96. I don't feel the need to divide everything up and draw this line in the sand when one era ended and another began.

    It just aggravates me.

A huge peeve of mine, too. I didn't realize Hagar himself used it. To me it's all Van Halen.

Hell, I never heard anybody try to call them Van Cherone in 1998. I guess they were called much worse things, haha!

But yeah, most major bands have lineup changes at some point and I've never heard any other fan base do this, it just always seemed utterly childish to call them "Van Hagar" during those years. It was always Van Halen.

I guess now they should be "Van Wolfie"

    Retarded...

It's wholly appropriate. We all love this band but like it or not, the eras are so vastly different in attitude and sound, that it's good to differentiate imo.

And VHIII was much farther away than that, and people still called it Van Halen.

Most of the changes between the DLR years and the Hagar years (keyboards/radio friendly singles) had to do with the music climate overall, but Eddie was still writing the music.

Rush was a completely different band from the 70s to the mid/late 80s as well, but it was still Rush. And the same thing has happened with many bands.

    It isn't "retarded" at all.

What's retarded is why anyone would get bent out of shape because of it.

In my head it's all Van Halen but in threads or talking to people it's a good way to distinguish the two eras. Pretty harmless if you ask me.

Yeah I used to get annoyed by the labels, but like you said, it's just to distinguish the different eras when having a conversation.

At the end of the day it's all VAN HALEN =vh=

Well, in my experience over nearly 30 years with hearing it, it was never used as some sort of respectful shorthand to delineate eras, it was used purely as a pejorative. By the same nuts who are all over any Hagar song on youtube and various forums calling it "gay" and "pussy rock" and so on. So yes, most often the motivation for using that term is absolutely retarded. And besides, it's just not consistent, I never heard anybody try to call VHIII anything but Van Halen and it was FAR more different.

I should clarify, I DON'T think everyone, especially on this forum, is motivated by the same thing. Just that from high school on from what I've experienced the vast majority of people who use that have been that way.

I'll use those terms when talking to friends, but I also just think of the band as a whole as Van Halen. Yes the music changed over the years, but most bands do that. And while that split the fan base for VH, the same applies to Rush. Many of their hardcore fans didn't like the heavy synth albums of the mid to late 80s. Same goes for Metallica after they hit it big with the Black Album. Whenever bands change sounds/styles or have lineup changes, inevitably some people will be annoyed and hop off the bandwagon while new people, who may not have been big fans of the older stuff, jump on the bandwagon. That's the music industry.

Exactly. But it was still Rush, and it was still Metallica. Lots of bands morph whether they have lineup changes or not. What gets me is how much blame Sammy takes for the change when Eddie was always the one writing the music, he wanted to play keys more. Eddie chose Sammy to front the band and Eddie wrote the music so if you don't like it take it up with him. People act like Sammy came in like some sort of coup or something. Van Halen sounded the way Eddie wanted them to sound during that period. Therefore, it's still Van Halen.

When I first logged on here, I noticed the term Van Hagar was used as a put down. Over the years I've noticed "fans" of the Sam years using it. Sam himself uses it, because I think he wants to keep his era alive. I personally will never use it when I refer to the Sam years. Not only do I think it's dumb, the "haters" will also win. Can't be having that.. I blame Joe Dirt. The classic years, otherwise known as the Dave era/years or the Sam era/ years. That's Van Halen!

Both eras were awesome, and anyone who says otherwise is subscribing to a bias. I prefer Dave era, but can anyone with working ears listen to the song 5150 and hold his jaw in place? It's phenomenal. And can you really deny that Hagar has one of the best voices in rock and roll? Totally unique and balls to the wall.

I look at it with an elitist air. I always say Van Halen. But I tolerate the use of Van Hagar by an educated fan who simply uses it for clarity. But sometimes a casual fan uses it as an editorial jibe. I usually quickly correct those "fans," pretty much with the paragraph above.

I have no issues with those terms to describe the eras of the band.

I use the terms because there are two different versions of the band. Yeah I prefer one era. Doesn't mean the other three eras suck. Everything was different with the eras. Eddie's tone which has no bearing on the singer is totally different post 84. The way albums were produced is far different after 84. Length between albums is different. Al's drum sound. Mike's backup vocals. Woflgang backups. How Many Say I?

Sure its all Van Halen but people have preferences. Its ok to segment them. I do it with Ozzy and his guitarists. WHy can't I do it with various versions of singers in VH?
