    Loving the videos !
Seen all of these before , but never get tired of them . Thanks so much . There (IMO) needs to be more posters who share this kind of stuff .

Regardless of era/ego/persona . It's Van Halen history and deserves to be viewed en masse .

Man , there's a GREAT Balance era video that I came across recently . I'll have to do another search to find it on Youtube . Inside 5150 footage and Eddie playing some neat blues/chicken pickin' stuff , while mentioning that he wanted to make sure the producer thought he was "all I'm cracked up to be" .

Kudos and Cheers all around !

I loved the Balance tour and all of the media rounds they made. They seemed happy.

Someone should try to post the USA Today (?) clips from inside the 5150 studio . One of the better interview videos I've seen from '95 .

That must have been really cool to be at the show where the monks opened 'Seventh Seal'.

The versions of Eagles Fly with the band kicking in are just flipping awesome. I can't listen to the all-acoustic version anymore. Ed's playing is just so cool to listen to on this song.

I know Sammy sort of wore out the whole Eagles Fly joint, but these 95 "all-band" versions are the best.

I wonder what it would have sound like if the whole band played the song like it was heard on the album?

Okay, having said all of that, by 95, I kind of wished they dumped all the solo Sammy tunes and/or covers (who cares if we hear 55 at that point). They had 4 albums worth of material...in 95, I would have liked to hear 5150, AFU, Summer Nights, Good Enough..and even a curve ball on a couple of new Dave tunes...Okay, I'll contradict myself with my no covers comment, but I always thought Sammy would do a good job with Where Have All the Good Times Gone..and, maybe he would have been more comfortable, since it was a Kinks original and not a Dave tune.

I saw them twice in 1995. I thought the shows were good and tight, but began to have a "been there, done that" vibe. Reading some of the unofficial stuff from Sam's alleged book (that never hit the shelves, but I imagine some or most became his book, Red)...he talks about acknowledging that fact..the staleness. He suggested they all take peyote and rent a house in the desert or some nonsense. He also wanted Al to listen to some African drumming for inspiration.

    Anyway...

I don't think they did 55 on the balance tour did they? I think (aside from sammy's solo spot) they only did 1 way to rock which I still really, really like as a VH tune.

I'll have to dig up the chapter of the unreleased book you're talking about...I remember thinking what sammy was saying sounded pretty cool actually. Could have been a disaster but the concept of pushing the boundry's of what they were doing sounded cool to me.

Totally agree. I'm not much into the drug culture, but just the idea that he wanted to really change it up...Who knows? Maybe those types of ideas were the beginning of the end for him with the brothers. I know they were having problems with his lyrics (well on Amsterdam and Humans Being anyway). I would have loved one more Sammy sung album...circa 1996-1997. Ed's direction on some of what many call the "darker" tunes on Balance, Humans Being, the two Dave tunes...there was a "heaviness" to his playing ...the whole band really...it was cool.

I haven't heard Ed talk about the pre-Gary era. I think they could have pushed out another album...maybe relied on some unreleased stuff they worked on with Sammy throughout the 4 previous albums...ADKOT for the Sam era, if you will. Track 1 = Crossing Over

I think for the most part Sam's lyrics were fine when he was in VH. They wrote alot of tunes like right now and the seventh seal which lyrically were cool as hell. Sam catches alot of static for cranking out some dumb lyrics and that's fine, I can admit that some of the lyrics weren't spectacular in some cases but I think he did a great job overall.

I like Amsterdam. I always liked amsterdam. I understand why people don't like it but I think it's awesome. if anything I can't stand the lyrics on Feelin'....well, I don't like the entire song to be honest-except the solo and the riff leading into the solo. It sounds forced to me, the whole thing sounds forced.

I don't really like Humans Being as a song either. I like the music and the guitar but the lyrics and whatever they did to sam's voice ruin it for me. It only sounds like VH during the "shine on" parts.

I used to have a magazine where Sam said he had 5 songs that ended up on MTM ready (lyrically) worked up and ready to go. I think a song like Both Sides Now would have been spectacular with ed and al's input. the lyrics are great, it's a real feel good kind of a song. It's great as is but I'd love to hear what Ed and sam could have done with it. same with Leaving the Warmth of the Womb...imagine EVH on that tune...it would have been a mosnter.
