Default New Album With DAVID LEE ROTH & John5

Former MARILYN MANSON and current ROB ZOMBIE guitarist John 5 (real name: John William Lowery) has recorded an "incredible" new album with VAN HALEN singer David Lee Roth which the axeman hopes will see the light of day in the not-too-distant future.

John 5, whose first "big break" came when he was selected by Roth to play lead guitar on the critically well-received 1998 release "DLR Band", tells Canadian rock journalist Mitch Lafon in a new interview (hear audio below): "[Dave and I] just made another record, and it's, like, the 'California Sessions', [Dave] was calling it. And it's 11 of the greatest songs you'll ever hear, and it's just me and Dave, and we had Gregg Bissonette play drums on it. And it's unbelievable. There's a song called 'Somewhere Over The Rainbow Bar & Grill'. And you know, just great, great songs. And hopefully sometime it'll see the light of day. But he's, of course, busy with VAN HALEN and all that stuff. But it's an incredible record."

He added: "[The new album with Dave] was made not too long ago — like, probably, maybe, a year and a half ago or something like that. 'Cause I always go over to his house and we write music and things like that. It's a lot of fun. They're all original songs. I would just go over to his house during the day and write this music and then he would book the studio at night. So we would go into A&M Studios — Henson Studios, it's called now — and we'd record. And it's so great. I mean, it sounds like just Dave from that 'Van Halen I' or 'II' or 'Women And Children First' era, [in terms of his] singing [style], and it's incredible, man. It's really incredible. He loves it too, so maybe it'll see the light of day sometime."

That was the one line that got me excited, but I had the same reaction.

Since Dave hasn't put out a proper solo studio album (of new original songs) since '98, I would love to hear this ASAP of course...but only in between new VH albums--where it doesn't slow any of their progress down.

Even though it sucked during time having little new DLR music in '99-'11, I have to say a lot of the magic of ADKOT was the fact that both VH and DLR hadn't released a studio album since 1998. And "Diamond Dave" doesn't count because it was all covers except one song and a couple novelty tracks.

    VH only had:

    "It's About Time"
    "Up for Breakfast"
    "Learning to See"
    "Rise"
    "Catherine"

    DLR only had:

"Look at All the People Here Tonite!"
    "Ashley Abernathy"
    "Flex"
"'How About a Little Fire' Scarecrow?"
    "Seriously Affected"
    Diamond Dave

Definitely added to the excitement of it.

I'd like to hear it , but have NO worries about it affecting the VH machine . It can't IMO . No matter how many ads John 5 has in Guitar World .

It's no doubt a good record . J5 is an awesome player . BUT ... if and when it's put out , this disc will in NO WAY encroach on the current push for a new Van Halen record or 'great project' .

I have doubts this record would be that great. Or anything close to ADKOT. There might be a few real good songs but I wouldn't expect much more than that.

Who knows ? John 5 is always doing "incredible" stuff, when you read his interviews. It means nothing to me.

With that said, I believe John 5 is one of the best players out their right now and I sure would like to have a copy of those California Sessions

The problem is that even if it's incredible, it will sell 20000 copies. Unless Dave does it for artistic reasons, financially it's a bust before it even comes out. He has no commercial appeal at this point. ADKOT sold 400k. Classic rock doesn't sell. Music sales in general are a joke. Unless you are an Adele, I dont understand how you could make it in the music business. Sam has commented on this with regards to his own stuff.
