Default This has probably been asked a million times but-

Does anyone know what the harmoniser settings were for the FUCK album? So- detune up, detune down and delay settings for each?
    Cheers

This, in my opinion, was the worst effect he ever used. It totally killed his tone.

I'm not positive about Ed's exact settings , but I'm sure there's a few guys on here who will steer you in the right direction . Not everyone is always logged in at the same time ...

Regarding FUCK ? Great guitar tone on that album IMO . I still love how massive it sounds after all these years !

From what I understand from what I have read -- I believe it was normal one channel, and 98% (2% detuned) the other.

I don't care for it, personally.

Even though this record has a drier sound than For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge, the guitars still have that chorus-y shimmer that's become a staple of your sound lately. Do you double most of your rhythm tracks?

No, not at all. But everything has the Eventide harmonizer on it. The dry guitar signal is on the left, and the duplicate sound that the Eventide generates is on the right. I barely use the harmonizer as an effect; it's just to split my guitar to both sides of the stereo spectrum. I have it set to detune to 98, so it harmonizes just a little.

When did you start splitting your signal like this?

I think Fair Warning, or the album after. Maybe 5150.. I forget. But that's been my thing ever since. In the old days, Donn Landee [engineer on every Van Halen album from Van Halen (Warner Bros, 1978) through OU812 (Warner Bros, 1988)] would have my dry signal on the left and a little echo or reverb on the right. And I'm going, "Well, why don' t we use the harmonizer and get the whole fucking guitar over there instead of just [makes breathy noise to imitate the decay of a reverb or Echoplex unit] -- the tail-end of everything I play. I hated that sound.

Really? I always thought of it as a really cool trademark of your sound.

I can't stand it. I guess it worked for the first record. But after that it got old really fast. If you have a car and the left speaker's blown, the guitar is gone. If you're sitting on the right in the back seat, you don 't hear the guitar even if both front speakers work. What kind of shit is that?

amazing...Ed says he doesn't like ultimate guitar sound he had for 6 albums. I guess he's really referring to the method of having him panned to one side mostly, not the actual tone. but still ...

I was going to say that yesterday , and just didn't log in to mention it .
Yeah - there's harmonizer on FW , DD , and 1984 . I love the Roth stuff too , but am sick to death of the preschool mentality that Sam killed the band and ruined Ed's tone .

Go back to the beginning and harmonizer/detune is there. I think the outro call and response leads on Ice Cream Man sound just like the Bottoms Up! Solo. That's Eventide. Once I recognized I wonder how I never noticed it on FW.

It was the 80's. Even Jimmy Page in The Firm was using a detune effect. I personally am glad he moved away from reverb and uses the ping pong delays. So if that's Sammy's fault I need to thank him.

I'm pretty sure I can hear detune on Ed's core tone on every Dave era album, except for VHI... and it may well be hiding really low in the mix there too.

People who are looking to bash his tone later than 1984 need to really look elsewhere than blaming detune wholesale...

It's used on an insane amount of tracks on an insane amount of albums in pretty much every genre.

    I started World War 3!!!
So- if they were using harmoniser on most of the albums- how often would you say they used a sonic maximiser/ aurel exiter etc type device?
I run a Sonic max through the loop of my 6505 and I swear the sound is more 'Ed' with it on- I don't think I've ever seen one in his live racks but the sound seems to be there on the albums?

Agreed. I think losing Ted Templeman in the DLR divorce made more of an impact. 5150 and OU812s production suffered massively for it. It turned around with FUCK though.

Impossible to say without being in the studio and seeing the mix recalled. Like you I've never seen a sonic maximizer in Ed's rig, but it would be tough to rule out completely because who knows what the mix or mastering engineer's chains were.
