Default Your Favorite Tune on 3

I know. VH3 is a turd. How can we possibly have a thread talking about favorite 3 songs. Hey, if you don't dig it, click off.

My favorite song on 3 is ONCE. I think the outro guitar work is freaking haunting. It might not be a Van Halen song, but call it the Eddie Van Halen project, and this one shines.

The version for the video where Gary doesn't sound so strained is even better.

This song should have been promoted more at the time. They should have played it live on the late night talk shows. The video should have been more than an internet release.

Last thing I'll say is that we all know that Ed likes Peter Gabriel. The influence on Once really comes through.

Fire In The Hole, I suppose. Killer intro.

Have no idea what Gary's singing though.

Without You is the only cut I keep in the rotation. It's the only track where Gary's voice comes close to sounding like it belongs. The melody works, and the music is fantastic.

There is something of merit about almost all the songs on 3. The problem with 3 is that there are a lot of songs that are ruined by either poor production choices or weird vocals/melodies. I think "That's Why I Love You" was the best tune to come out of the 3 sessions, but on the actual album I'd have to say "Without You."

Every other song on there has potential (except for HMSI). They just needed a better producer, and Gary needed to stay in a comfortable vocal range.

I think you make an excellent point. A better producer and production would have made a big difference. Even the song I mentioned, Once, should have had the guitar out front more, and Gary obviously was straining...so much so that they recorded another version with him singing much less strained for the video.

You and Your Blues sounds very much like One I Want to Me, but with better lyrical accompaniment...not that the lyrics to One I Want are bad...actually, I think they are rather clever...it's just when they are sung in the song...and One I Want needs a better chorus...like You and Your Blues. I don't know why, I just get the same feel for these songs, but in my opinion You and Your Blues just beats it - hands down.

That's Why I Love You is great musically. I really think Gary sounds like shit. He isn't singing in tune at all, particularly when he sings, that's why I love you, babe. I get that as a rock singer you can sing around the melody, but I just think that song had huge potential, and it was blown. No wonder they left it off the record.

Exactly my thoughts. When I first heard YAYB I thought "this is the DLR version of One I Want." Same type of riff, same vibe, but reigned in production and DLR's charisma/lyrics just make it a better song. The solo in One I Want smokes though.

yep, have to agree with this.

ironically I like this track because it reminds me of some of the rocky-er tracks off Extreme's 'Waiting For The Punchline' album, more than it does a VH song.

Love the intro to this tune. Classic Edward. Yet--the rest of the song just doesn't get it done....IMO.
