Default Keyboards and Future Van Halen Material

I was sitting back watching an old VH concert from 1988. It was the Japan show, Pro Shot and pretty well done. Anyway for that show Ed was still actually playing the keyboard tunes which I thought was pretty neat. I got to thinking would VH fans be bothered by keyboards on future van halen releases? I'm not talking about the little keyboard parts on tattoo, I'm talking about rock tunes that are keyboard driven instead of guitar driven like Jump or Dreams.

I would welcome it. A good tune is a good tune. Ed is more than just a guitar player.

If you look at the keyboard-driven songs (proper songs as opposed to instrumental skits) in the VH catalog:

    Jump
    I'll Wait
    Dreams
    Love Walks In
    When It's Love
    Feels So Good
    Right Now
    Not Enough

these are probably some of my least fav VH tracks if I'm being honest... (although the only ones I flat out can't stand are Love Walks In and Not Enough)

ADKOT was a breath of fresh air cause it was so heavy and guitar driven. I think I prefer that kind of Van Halen

Whatever makes a song great, they should do it. I would like to list:

    • And the Cradle Will Rock
    • Sunday Afternoon in the Park
    • One Foot out the Door
    • Dancing in the Streets
    • 1984
    • Jump
    • I'll Wait
    • Right Now

And yep, I even included "Right Now" because the music is so good.

The only thing is I just don't think Ed's into keyboards at all anymore. I seriously doubt he's touched one in years. And the "Tattoo" thing is so minor as to almost not even exist.

My main issue with "Jump" and "I'll Wait" live is that -- and I hate to say it -- you just end up with too much guitar. I seriously doubt though that Ed will ever play keyboards again live. A few versions on the 84 tour of the keyboard songs -- whew, there were some major eff-ups. Guitar is much more forgiving live -- but you hit the wrong chord on a keyboard and it's jarring.

That said -- pre-recorded keyboard tracks can be troublesome too. The time a few years ago that Ed had an E-flat tuned guitar on "Jump" was a total effing disaster.

I'm down with it -- it would fit in the catalog. I think that if you look at it, keyboards in VH was really primarily only about a decade-long phase.

As far as new material... I just want to hear Ed play guitar or cello.

    As far as live...
The ONLY keyboard song I'm really interested in hearing live is "One Foot Out the Door"

Can I get an AMEN, brothers? \('',)/

I for one wouldn't mind at all. The VH keyboard tunes aren't among my favorites by a long shot...Truth be told, I generally hate keyboards in a lot of the 80's and 90's music, (and I play keyboards! lol) with the exception of VH, Rush, and even Queen, but a lot of the other stuff sounded so goddam generic and cheesy. See...That's the thing with Eddie's keyboard playing, and I'm gonna say right off that though the Jump and I'll Wait synth patches are dated, they're still enjoyable because of how Ed uses them, and tweaked them to make the sound warmer, and a bit more driven.
Like others said...Don't know if he'd ever do it again. I do know a few years ago, Eddie sent some of his old classic Oberheim's in for repairs and calibration, so he obviously still has an interest. Just don't know how much it fits in with Dave's style...I mean even though it was done with Dave, it was a huge bone of contention, at least image wise as far as Dave was concerned.
Mind you they are older....Maybe not such an issue any more.

I don't know if Ed isn't into keyboards. How can we say that? I actually think Ed has always been into keyboards. If I were a betting man (and I am, who wants odds?), I'd say Ed noodles on the keys all of the time. Furthermore, I think it has a positive and inspiring affect on his guitar playing.

Would I like to see a keyboard tune? Ehh...something more piano sounding like Not Enough or Right Now would be kind of cool. (Not How Many Say I)

I love it when they have a few keyboard/piano songs on an album. It ads variety to the album.

I concur with 85% but I gotta say I was into I'll Wait and Right Now because they were truly different than normal VH, but had a good "vibe" at the same time. The others were poppy, MTV heyday songs that grated on me as bad as the chorus line in Fire in the Hole (God help me, that song had potential until I heard that part)

He's a frigging guitar legend and musician obviously, but if I wanted VH that way, I would listen to Linkin Park - Give me some guitar

I'll Wait is actually a really good tune and could be one of Daves best vocals ever (IMO). but Ed's keyboard setting hurts my ears, in a bad way. it sounds like something out of a cheesy Italian horror movie! I can never get used to it...
