    Default That guitary flippy thingamabob...

Sorry if this has been discussed...

Just saw this photo at the VHND:

What was that thing plexiglass thingy called?
What songs was it used on?
Why did he stop using it?

    Cheers,

Eddie used that plexi glass device on the 1984 tour . I've also seen pictures of him using a similar contraption made out of wood . It was mainly used during his live guitar solo spot . It allowed him to play the guitar almost like a piano , with both hands over top of the neck .

Some of his live solo ended up on 'Judgement Day' , to introduce the main surf guitar solo , as well as the outro solo . There's great footage of the tecnique at work on the RHRN dvd . By this time , Ed had long since rid himself of the device and simply played the guitar normally - using the same overhand procedure ...

    Hope that helps ? Cheers

    Cheers to both of you....

So it appears it's inglorious name is:

    "Musical instrument support" (clever that!)

Patent filed by EVH: July 30, 1985.

I wish he would have continued the use of such innovations.

Thanks again for the quick answers guys. ('',)b

Although it looks neat and the photos of it are interesting, when it came time to hear that part of the solo I always thought it was the most annoying part. It just never sounded right (to me). I suspect he and others felt it was a weak feature of the solo section and thus he has rarely featured the technique/contraption since.

I disagree . The 1984 bootlegs I've heard sound fantastic . I wish Eddie had branched out more with this type of technique and style . He did a lot of similar moves during his LWAN solo ... During the Mean Street tapping bits . Not the usual fare , but what was between the familiar riffs and passages . KILLER !!!

It was different to what he's done in his solos since ... Haha

Regarding the 'tray' he had on his guitar during 1984 ? Ed made a comment that even bluegrass and pedal steel players might like it and have a use for it . I'm surprised he didn't follow through with that innovation like he did with other things . I'm also surprised that none of the replica builders have added that to any of their guitars ... Just sayin '

'Judgement Day' , anyone ? Anyone at all who's not a simple drone ? Haha !!!

Eddie has even used the technique on other tours . !998 Before the before the Mean Street intro . 2004 during his solo . Yeah , it was sans the plexiglass tray , yet the approach was pretty much the same ... There was some unique and unprecedented rock guitar music played there IMO .

Sorry nobrowncandy and/perhaps nobrownM&M's . Or were you citing the tray itself ?

    Here it is in action.

I believe he also had a tray table on the back of the frankie at some point - maybe it was on the frankie first while testing it out before he got the kramer 5150?

If you look at the back of the frankie it has the same wear where the tray table was as on the Kramer 5150. Also he must have broke the reflector so the tray table would fit on the frankie.

    I think he'd be too self-concious it.

Looks like the traced the photo from the first post and then added a detail schematic for the patent filing purposes.

I've never seen this before (and i saw VH twice in 84). I really liked most of this. Some parts seem forced, but enjoyed it overall.

Awesome video . Thanks sharing it here , Johnny B.

I have that bootleg on dvd and it's one of my favs from the Roth era. Prior to getting it , I had a 1984 San Diego boot on cd . During the 'tray' part of Ed's solo , I was dumbfounded upon hearing it ! For the life of me - I couldn't figure out what he was doing

My memory isn't what it used to be......but I could swear that the first time I saw Eddie use the plexi shelf was on the Fair Warning tour during the intro to Mean Street. Anyone remember that ????
