Default 7/1/78: Van Halen Conquers the Texxas Jam (Photos & Video)

After losing almost all their gear on their flight from Japan, Van Halen was forced to play rented, borrowed and begged-for equipment in front of the biggest crowd they ever played for!

On July 1st, 1978, nearly 100,000 people crammed inside the Cotton Bowl in Dallas, during the hottest day of the decade for the first real stadium rock show in the south. In 104 degree heat—over a twelve hour period—they watched Aerosmith, Van Halen, Heart, Journey, Ted Nugent, Eddie Money, Cheech and Chong, and more! It was the first stadium rock show in Texas and it’s success launched a decade of stadium rock shows all over the south.

It was the summer of 1978, when rock ‘n’ roll was reigning supreme. Rising stars Van Halen were riding high, thanks to a smash album and a trail of concerts that left rock fans completely blown away. July 1 was to be the biggest show of their career—they were to play in front of an enormous crowd at the Cotton Bowl. Little did they know, things were about to go terribly wrong…

Saw this on the VHND earlier today . In fact , I commented on it in another thread .

Related to the VHND , I sent you a message about Ed's Wild Life music clips . They are awesome !!! Any chance they'll be released on cd or something ? Listening on a computer is one thing , but cranking them through a full blown home theater system would be epic ...

I would say the chance of an official release of The Wild Life film score is pretty much nothing.

As with everything else in VH's past...

Maybe one day, Ed will have an epiphany and finally understand that his fans actually like this kind of stuff.

Aside from the hot chick with the feathered hair, whom I would most graciously bang, look at the short cutoffs on the 70's homo on the left with the pose going on (lol).

Those cutoff shorts were fairly common casual wear back in 1978, weren't they? I think a lot of young rock fans wore them to summer concerts? I was only 8 years old at the time, so I wasn't hip enough to have a pair. And look...the guy on the far right is sporting a pair just like it!

I had cutoff jeanshorts to but not so high as my nutsack was hanging out of them. Then came the OP cord shorts with the boxers hanging out the bottom...now that was epitome of cool in So Cal.

They look miserable, which makes sense given the temp that day.

I had those cut offs and ditto on the chick. Looks like my senior class yearbook!

I'm kind of impressed with the guy wearing a "Judas Priest" shirt in the Summer of 1978. If I recall correctly, Judas Priest didn't become a household name in the U.S. until the release of British Steel in 1980.
