    Default Pots

Hey guys, Im doing my first build and I am not sure which pots would be the best for me to get. I like the pots in my Gibson SG, but dont want to pay for Gibson branded pots if I dont have to. I dont like CTS or EVH pots as there isnt enough, "play," for me with them. Im running a plexi amp, so I need them to be very subtle so I can get clean sounds out of them.

Honestly, after doing 8 builds, Gibson does make the best pots. Especially the long-stem ones, which are typically required unless you're using a pickguard. If you're using a pickguard, a standard All Parts will do you fine.

Just make sure you get 500k for humbuckers. 250k is for single coils.

I prefer Bourns low friction. Did I spell that right? Bournes? Nah. I was right the first time. I scored a couple non EVH branded cheap. 500k. I've also used Dimarzio 500k and they worked great. I don't like new tight pots. I used to spin the knob as I watched tv to get a looser feel. Now I buy Bourns. But I can see people not liking the loose feel.

Big fan of the Bourns low friction. I don't like tight knobs either I spin them a lot.

Really pots are the cheapest thing to buy on a guitar. Just spend whatever you need to get what works best.

The greater the diameter of the knob you put on top of it, the looser it will feel.

I also like the Bourns low friction pots. I do like the low friction aspect of them, but what I really like is the taper.

With my guitar plugged into a high-gain amp, I can back the volume pot off by 25% and I have a less-distorted crunchy sound. At halfway turned down, it's just breaking up, and at 75% of the way down, I have a clean, bright, jangly tone coming out of the distortion channel. It's great! I haven't personally used any other pots that attenuate the volume that evenly along the whole taper and clean up so well.

Do you other guys that use Bourns have similar results?

    This + 1000000

I use Bourns low friction pots on all of my guitars, and I also use Bourns high friction pots on any audio gear/amps that I build whenever I can.

I also notice the taper -- I've tried probably 15 different brands and 50 models of pots over the years, and Bourns is my favorite, period.

I'll give you guys another hint.... I've tried just about as many switches as I have tried pots. I'm a fan of NKK switches for pickup selection, coil tapping, etc. just like I'm a fan of Bourns for pots. Having a Bourns / NKK combo taking care of your guitars' entire electrical system is by far my favorite.

I've used DiMarzio 500k pots in a few of my main guitars in the past . Never had any issues with them and they performed well .

I'm very keen on trying those Bourns low friction ones very soon . I'm waiting for a Floyd Rose Special to come in the mail this week . Then I'll be taking 2 of my guitars to a local tech for some upgrades/setup work . I may replace the stock pots with the Bourns versions .

I know for a fact that Long & McQuade carries the EVH branded Bourns pots , but I think they go for $15.00 a pop . They may also stock the 'regular' ones without the EVH stamp .

You might have luck at Steve's Music , or Cosmo music . I'm pretty sure they have stores across the country - although you didn't say where in Canada you live ? Don't forget eBay or the official VH Store online .

Hope some of this helps ya out
