Bikers Head to Mexico to Free Sgt. Andrew Tahmooressi

As the U.S. struggles with the massive influx of Mexican, and other Central American, immigrants there is still the matter of Sgt. Andrew Tahmooressi sitting in a Mexican prison. Though the Obama Administration found justification in trading 5 dangerous Taliban leaders for the release of Bowe Bergdahl, they have been apathetic toward the plight of a young Marine who has been imprisoned for "making a wrong turn." In April, Tahmooressi got lost and landed at the Mexican border while carrying three legally registered guns in his vehicle. Now he is facing weapons trafficking charges and awaiting trial. Upon discovering that he had crossed the border, Tahmooressi reached out for help via this 911 call:

No help was offered by the 911 caller and our federal government has been quiet about the incident. It appears that the "powers that be" are content to let Tahmooressi rot in jail.

An American Marine deserves much better than this and a group of bikers has had enough.

Rather than waiting for the Obama Administration to do the right thing, their plan is to do it themselves.

Mexican Officials: Marine Crossed Border 3 Previous Times
Mexican officials detail the number of high-powered, loaded weapons seized

The U.S. Marine being held in Mexico on weapons charges did not identify himself as military when he was arrested two months ago and appeared to have entered Mexico through the same border crossing three times before, Mexican officials said Wednesday.

Andrew Tahmooressi, 25, has been held in a Mexican jail since his arrest April 1, after he drove his black Ford pickup through the San Ysidro Port of Entry into Tijuana.

The Office of Mexico’s Attorney General said in a statement Wednesday that the night of his arrest, Tahmooressi did not identify himself as an active member of the U.S. armed forces.

Mexican officials also said they have information provided by U.S. authorities showing that Tahmooressi had entered through the same border crossing on three prior occasions.

Police at the border entry seized a 12-gauge loaded shotgun, a 5.56-caliber rifle loaded with a 30-round clip and with two additional clips, a .45-caliber loaded pistol, loaded with 10 .45-caliber rounds and with two additional clips from the Marine's pickup truck, according to the officials.

Tahmooressi also carried two boxes of 12-gauge ammunition and 300 rounds for the rifle.

Family members said Tahmooressi got lost near the border after dark and took a wrong turn into Mexico.

Tahmooressi, who served two tours of duty in Afghanistan, had been in the San Diego area to receive treatment for post-traumatic stress disorder.

this is a very interesting case. I wonder how this would have been handled had it been a Mexican or Canadian who "got lost" and went over the border with a number of weapons.

Not sure about a Canadian citizen. But in the case of a Mexican, they could probably get just as lost as they wanted, until they ended up at the Canadian border. I don't think the US government gives a flip about the southern border anymore.

More Than 134,000 Petition Obama Admin. to Demand Release of Sgt. Tahmooressi — Here’s the Response They Received

    Aug. 29, 2014

More than 134,000 people signed a petition asking the Obama administration to demand the release of U.S. Marine Sgt. Andrew Tahmooressi from a Mexican prison. Tahmooressi, who is reportedly suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder, has been imprisoned for nearly five months after being arrested for unintentionally crossing into Mexico with firearms.

The White House responded to the popular petition on Friday, calling for Mexican authorities to handle the Marine’s case “expeditiously” rather than demanding his release.

Andrew Tahmooressi has been held by Mexican authorities since March 31.

Read the White House’s full response below:

The U.S. State Department continues to provide extensive consular assistance to Mr. Tahmooressi, and will do so until his case is resolved. As in all cases when a U.S. citizen is arrested overseas, our goal is to see that Mr. Tahmooressi is treated fairly during the judicial process with the hope that he can receive the support, both emotional and medical, that he may require now and at the conclusion of the proceedings.

Mexico is one of the United States’ most important partners. We have close economic and cultural ties, and we work closely with them on numerous sensitive issues. While we will not go into detail about our private diplomatic discussions on this case, U.S. officials, including Secretary of State John Kerry, have spoken to Mexican officials at the highest levels regarding Mr. Tahmooressi’s case.

Mexican authorities have been very willing to engage on this issue. They have provided prompt and continued consular access and visitations. As a result, the State Department has been able to provide regular updates on Mr. Tahmooressi’s condition to his family, Members of Congress, and the press.

We respect the rule of law and expect the judicial process of sovereign nations to protect other U.S. citizens who might find themselves in similar circumstances in the future. We will continue to monitor the case and work with the Mexican authorities as this case proceeds through the Mexican judicial system. We continue to urge the Mexican authorities to process this case expeditiously.

Tahmooressi claims that he took a wrong turn and ended up at a border checkpoint. It was discovered that he was traveling with three firearms, a serious offense under Mexico’s strict gun laws.

Tahmooressi faces up to 14 years in prison if he’s convicted of illegally possessing guns and ammunition.
