Default Priest killed, another one injured in attack at Catholic church in Phoenix

I wonder how this one is going to end... A random crime, or an attack on religion...

Priest killed, another one injured in attack at Catholic church in Phoenix

(CNN) -- A priest was killed and another critically wounded in an attack at a Catholic church in Phoenix, police said early Thursday.

The Rev. Kenneth Walker was fatally shot, and the Rev. Joseph Terra is hospitalized in critical condition, police and church officials said. It was not clear what type of weapon was used to attack Terra, Sgt. Steve Martos of the Phoenix Police Department said.

A 911 call came in about 9 p.m. Wednesday (12 a.m. ET Thursday) from the Mater Misericordiae, or Mother of Mercy, Mission Catholic Church, Martos said.

The church celebrates Mass in the traditional Latin.

The emergency call to police was for a burglary and was made by one of the victims, Martos said.

When police arrived, they found the two priests badly injured. Walker died at the hospital.

Terra, the injured priest, was only able to minimally speak with authorities about what happened, Martos said. The priority is for him to be treated.

"Hopefully, once that individual receives treatment and is able to pull through, we can gather more information," Martos said.

A green 2003 Mazda Tribute was stolen from church property, police said, and it was found abandoned.

"The police are still gathering information and trying to sort through the details of this senseless act of violence," the Diocese of Phoenix said in a statement. "We ask that people offer prayers for both priests, the religious community, their families and the parish."

It's not the first time someone has tried to rob a church, so my first thought would never be that the crime is religiously motivated. Depending on the church, there's all sorts of gold plated candelabras, dishes, and statues which would make it a target for some moron on a bender to come in and try to get his score.

There was a nun who was mugged last week. Apparently even being a person of the cloth doesn't protect you from the world's worst.
CNN may think my opinion matters, but you shouldn't.

senseless if the motivation was robbery they were stupid. Churches purposely make sure they have little cash on hand and the property at the church is near impossible to fence or even sell for scrap

I think they'll find the perps were either out of their minds on drugs or it was religiously motivated

Police confirm arrest in slaying of Phoenix priest

PHOENIX (CBS5) - A 54-year-old ex-convict has been arrested in the shooting death of a 28-year-old Phoenix priest.

Phoenix police confirmed Gary Moran, a homeless man with an extensive criminal record, was arrested Sunday night and jailed on suspicion of shooting the Rev. Kenneth Walker multiple times at Mother of Mercy Mission Catholic Church in south Phoenix on Wednesday.

Phoenix Police Sgt. Steve Martos wrote on the police department's Twitter feed Monday morning that the arrest had been made.

The 28-year-old Walker was found with several gunshot wounds in the rectory of the church in the area of the Arizona Capitol building. The Rev. Joseph Terra was found severely beaten, but was able to call police immediately after the attack and administer last rites to Walker.

A Mazda SUV stolen from the church was found a few blocks away the night of the crime, police said.

Police did not say what led them to Moran.

Moran was booked into the Maricopa County Jail on one count of first-degree murder during a crime, first-degree murder, first-degree burglary, armed robbery with a deadly weapon, vehicle theft, misconduct involving weapons and other charges.

Moran was released from a Tucson prison on parole in April.

Terra was originally hospitalized in critical condition but was moved out of the intensive care unit Saturday night, though he will need time to recuperate. He is expected to make a full recovery.

Moran was sent to the Arizona Department of Corrections prison in Tucson on Feb. 8, 2005, on burglary and assault charges, and was released on supervised parole April 25.

He also has a 1989 conviction for felony burglary, and pleaded guilty to a weapons charge in 2000.
