    Default School Shooting in Oregon

Police: Injuries reported in Oregon high school shooting
pdated 12:10 PM EDT, Tue June 10, 2014

(CNN) -- Injuries, but no deaths, were reported in a Tuesday morning shooting at a high school near Portland, Oregon, police agencies said.

About an hour after the shooting, Oregon State Police said the area was secure, and that the situation is contained. No one was killed in the shooting, state police spokesman Lt. Greg Hastings said.

The shooting happened at about 8 a.m. PT at Reynolds High School in Troutdale, about 12 miles east of Portland, said Sue Strickland of the Troutdale Police Department.

Classes were in session at the time, Strickland said. It wasn't clear how many people were injured, and details about what led to the shooting weren't immediately available.

A couple of SWAT teams responded, Strickland said.

A tough week around North America....Moncton, Las Vegas, Seattle, Portland. These people live amongst us...and the odds of figuring out who the next one is are slim to none...

    Nothing to do with guns.

Sadly these people will find a way. We had something happen here in April where a guy stabbed 5 people to death at a party.

I have no clue what you can do to stop this.

CNN is now reporting that one student died, along with the shooter. That sucks.

Sadly we had another shooting up here today :

    https://ca.news.yahoo.com/vancouver-...185023936.html

Police have confirmed three people were shot in Vancouver this morning, including a female victim, a male suspect and a police officer who was involved in a shootout.

"Shortly after 11 a.m., police received reports of shots being fired outside of the Starbucks on Davie Street near Marinaside Crescent," said a statement released by police.

"When police arrived, they found a woman who had been shot. Paramedics were called and she was rushed to hospital in serious condition.

"A man believed to be responsible for the shooting was followed by police to the area of Science World where there was an exchange of gunfire that resulted in both the man and an officer being injured.

"The alleged shooter has been taken into custody and police believe that there are no suspects outstanding."

According to unconfirmed reports, the shooting centred around the Reckless bike shop on Davie Street, and the suspect fled by bike to Science World, where he was involved in a gunfight with police.

Police said the officer who was hit did not suffer serious injuries.

Large areas of the neighbourhoods were locked down as police responded to the shooting.

I just wish all these scumbags would just kill themselves without taking innocent lives first. Leaving the house and going on these homicide-suicide missions doesn't solve anything. Why take others down with you? Just take yourself out and be done with it.

I know I don't live in the USA, and I apologise in advance for sounding bitter, but I am actually starting to dread turning on the news. From an outside perspective, these incidents - and the apparent unwillingness to do anything about them - makes me so frustrated, bewildered, and upset! My heart goes out to the parents of the 14 year-old boy killed...I can't imagine how they must be feeling...

Without wishing to sound churlish, I am genuinely curious to know how much longer the statistics LoveMachine posts whenever something like this occurs, telling us that these incidents are comparatively rare, will continue to apply...

Also, according to the reports I've been hearing, the shooter was a young male...I'm not a betting person, but I wouldn't want to bet my house against him being white...Plus, one cannot help but wonder how in the hell he was able to obtain a semi-automatic rifle.

And I'm sorry for blathering - but I'll tell you something else, too...At one point I WAS considering going over to the States to teach. Nothing on this EARTH would persuade me to do that now. I just can't imagine why anyone would want to teach in an American school; I'm sure the possibility of arming teachers will be mooted once again - but unless you plan on spending a fortune training them in armed combat, kitting them out with full body armour (and the kids as well) and giving them a HUMONGOUS pay-rise, I can see a desperate teacher shortage in your near future.

It just makes me want to cry, and scream. How many MORE times is this going to happen before something - anything - is done???

Our President was wondering the same thing today?

Every time there is an incident like this, I believe most of us wonder 'when will something be done.' Sadly, aside from some heated debates, not much happens.
On the one hand you have people giving knee-jerk reactions calling for the guns, which must have fired on their own, to be banned. On the other side you have people clutching to a vague couple of sentences in our aged Constitution. Both sides will never find a happy middle ground. Most of these murderers seem to share a common trait of poor mental health. But for some reason, this doesn't get addressed by the powers that be.

Personally, I don't mind if people have guns. I do strongly mind, however, when these "law-abiding" gun owners aren't responsible with their guns. In a case like this one, the shooter was a student at the high school. Like you, I'd like to know where he got the gun. I don't think he obtained it in a legal matter due to his young age.

Nancy Lanza was a fucking douche for knowing her son was as fucked up as he was and, basically, supplying him with an arsenal of weaponry (pardon my slang medical evaluation). I've read about far too many young children mishandling daddy's gun and fatally shooting themselves or others. Bottom line is be very responsible with your guns. They're fucking guns after all!

    Thanks for the reply, Jimmy.

We have a lot of people with mental health problems over here, too. A LOT. And a major problem with lack of funding for mental health services. However, there is one big difference that I'm seeing - and it's not just the fact that we don't have a written constitution.

(CNN) -- An exasperated President Barack Obama on Tuesday expressed new surprise and dismay at the lack of congressional action on stemming gun violence, hours after yet another American community was jolted by a deadly school shooting.

He said the failure to expand background checks on firearms sales was his "biggest frustration" as president, and called on concerned citizens to vent their anger loudly.

Obama said it was "stunning" Congress couldn't pass laws making it harder to obtain firearms in the aftermath of the 2012 elementary school shooting that devastated Newtown, Connecticut, and stunned the nation.

Obama said the violence on that December morning amounted to the "worst day" of his presidency.

"Why aren't we doing something about this?" he asked during an online question-and-answer session on college costs at the White House.

"I will tell you, I have been in Washington for a while now. Most things don't surprise me. The fact that 20 six year olds were gunned down in the most violent fashion possible and this town couldn't do anything about it was stunning to me," he said.

Obama's remarks came hours after a student opened fire at a high school near Portland, Oregon, killing a classmate before turning the gun on himself.

The incident joined a list of dozens of shooting incidents at U.S. schools, campuses and public areas that have taken place since the 2012 Newtown massacre. Just Sunday, two police officers in Nevada were shot and killed while eating lunch.

"The country has to do some soul searching about this," he said. "This is becoming norm."

Ramping up restrictions on gun sales was a top priority of Obama's after Newtown.

A bipartisan measure that would have mandated background checks on gun sales failed to pass the Senate the following April, and other proposed measures, like a ban on assault weapons, garnered little support among lawmakers.

The failure of it all was seen as a major defeat for the President, who led the nation in mourning for the students and teachers killed in Connecticut.

Without congressional support, Obama signed dozens of unilateral executive actions meant to quell gun violence. Though broad action, like banning assault weapons or high capacity magazines, still require congressional approval.

On Monday, Obama said the United States was the only developed country on Earth where mass shootings occur with regularity, adding that "if public opinion does not change, we're not going to change."

And he shot down arguments that mental health was more to blame for mass killings than access to guns.

"The United States does not have a monopoly on crazy people. It's not the only country that has psychosis," he said. "And yet we kill each other in these mass shootings at rates that are exponentially higher than any place else. Well, what's the difference? The difference is that these guys can stack up a bunch of ammunition in their houses and that's sort of par for the course."

Politicians from both parties are "terrified" of the National Rifle Association, Obama said, saying the gun rights organization was well-funded and able to influence elections to prevent any significant new gun regulations from becoming law.

Late in the day on Capitol Hill, Democratic Rep. Earl Blumenauer stood before the chamber and could barely get the words out about the violence earlier in the day in his district at Reynolds High School in Troutdale.

"In a scene that is achingly familiar, this morning at Reynolds a shooting occurred, a student killed, the shooter died, a teacher wounded," he said.

The chamber then observed a moment of silence.
