The New Brunswick RCMP have confirmed that three officers have been killed and two have been wounded in a shooting in Moncton.

A police manhunt is still underway for Justin Bourque, 24. The RCMP say Bourque is considered "armed and dangerous."

"There is an active shooter in the Moncton area. We’re asking residents to stay in their homes and lock their doors," said Rogers-Marsh.

At 10:05 p.m. AT RCMP said the shooter was near the Costco.

The Horizon Health Network has confirmed on Twitter that the Moncton Hospital has received two patients with gunshot wounds. The hospital is restricting visitors to those with "critically ill family members."

The RCMP are advising people in the Hildegard Drive and Ryan Road area to stay inside "due to an ongoing shooting in the area."

The RCMP tweeted at 9:35 p.m. that the shooter is believed to be in the woods near Pinehurst Park.

Motorists were warned to avoid the Plaza Boulevard area.

Parts of Wheeler Boulevard are cordoned off and traffic on Mountain Road is backed up.

A police helicopter is flying in the area.

    'We're scared, obviously'

The shooting has rattled people living in the city's north end.

Will Njoku said he was emptying his dishwasher and putting his young children to bed just before 8 p.m. when he heard popping sounds.

"Within 30 seconds I heard sirens," he said.

Njoku said he heard five more shots after the sirens.

"We’re scared, obviously. We’re more terrified for the people who this shooter is basically in their backyard. I can picture these people’s houses," he said.

When the news broke that there was a shooter on the loose, Njoku said, he went out on his street to warn his neighbours.

"I felt pretty dumb. But there was people going down there. I just know my neighbourhood. It’s just kid city," he said.

    Premier 'shocked and saddened'

New Brunswick Premier David Alward issued a statement about the Moncton police shootings.

"I was shocked and saddened to learn of tonight's tragic situation in Moncton," Alward said.

"On behalf of all New Brunswickers, I would like to extend my thoughts and prayers to those affected. I would ask New Brunswickers, particularly in those areas identified by police, to follow the situation as it develops and to listen to the advice of police."

Moncton Mayor George LeBlanc also asked city residents to stay indoors.

"Terrible sad news for Moncton. Stay indoors and allow police to do their job. Prayers for the families," LeBlanc tweeted.

very unusual. The fact that all the victims are cops is even more unusual.

New Brunswick. Hope he's safe from harm and the cops find this guy and put about 60 bullets in him.

    WOW !
That's unreal ... We had the radio on all night at work , and heard no mention of this . For the Canadian Linkers on here , I'll be tuning in to CP24 to catch any updates .

R.I.P. to the slain officers and their families .

Thankfully, our gun control laws means acts like this are rare. We actually have a LOT of guns in Canada...

    Stay safe fella!

I can't believe this is happening in Moncton. I drive through it every year on the way to PEI.

Every day we all trust our lives in the hands of each other. Sadly stuff like this will happen at times and there isn't a damn thing we can do about it. It has nothing to do with gun control (so though based on his Facebook profile that seems like one of his causes) it just has to do with a madman intent on killing cops for some sick reason. I'm guessing he killed himself too and he's laying in the woods somewhere because these guys are usually cowards. He doesn't want to fight the police he wants to pick them off when they aren't suspecting it.

3 lives have been lost, 3 families have been destroyed. It's a really shitty day up here. #PrayForMoncton

Thanks guys, it's a ghost town. Undercover cop cars floating around, armoured trucks, they figure they have him holed up in the woods not far from here.

The guy is a gun nut and a cop hater, he had been posting all kinds of outlandish bull-shit supposedly, as if he's on some vigilante mission, a hero in his own sick little world.

We have never seen this kind of thing here, the closest thing I can recall is when Hutchinson and Ambrose forced two cops to dig their own graves before they killed them. It reminds me so much of Boston being locked down during the marathon, Tactical unit was brought in from Saint John last night, and my brother, who is a reporter, is stuck in the newsroom and worked til 3am, back at work at 7:50am this morning, and he slept more than a lot of the staff did.

Damn, they say he is still on the loose. I was hoping he would have been captured this morning. Tough in that part of the country with the wooded terrain.

or maybe not. Here's hoping he is by the end of this.

Police are scouring a Moncton, N.B., neighbourhood and warning residents to stay in their homes as they hunt for a heavily armed man after three RCMP officers were killed and two were wounded in shootings Wednesday night.

Police said Thursday morning that the suspect has been spotted a few times in the manhunt, which began last night.

Codiac RCMP Supt. Marlene Snowman told a news conference that police spotted the suspect three times Thursday morning — in the area near Gorge and Mountain roads, and two other times. The police were unable to apprehend him.

Roger Brown, RCMP assistant commissioner, also told the news conference that "there is no way to describe the level of hurt" inside the police force.

He promised to keep the public updated on the situation throughout the day.

"This is working through your worst nightmare," Brown said.

He said Moncton is still gripped by a "very, very dangerous situation."

"We have an armed and dangerous individual that we do not exactly know where he is, and what that really means is that we need to collectively work together to ensure that nothing else happens, that we don't have somebody else injured, whether it be a citizen, whether it be a bystander, whether it be another police officer," Brown told the news conference.

Earlier on Thursday, RCMP Const. Damien Theriault said on CBC's Information Morning in Moncton that people need to "stay inside for their own safety."
The hunt started after police received a call at 7:20 p.m. AT Wednesday about a man wearing camouflage and carrying guns.

Additional police resources from across New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island are in Moncton to assist RCMP in the manhunt.

New Brunswick RCMP confirmed three officers were killed and two other officers were wounded by a heavily armed gunman.

"I lost three friends," said Theriault.

"And now we need to pull together and locate this individual as quickly as possible to ensure everyone's safety.

"We are professionals and we have a job to do right now. We will have time to grieve after."

The RCMP's commanding officer in New Brunswick said on Thursday that he could not identify the officers who were killed or wounded. He said family members were in the process of being notified.

"We need to focus back on the families. We have one of our members with three children. And you know, these are, these are real-life situations," he said.

Brown promised to keep the public informed of any developments in the Moncton manhunt.

"We will come back [to speak to the media] and once this person is apprehended, and he will be, then I think we, collective, I know from a policing perspective, we will breathe a sign of relief," Brown said.

"But at this point in time, that's not the situation right now.
