I met Jeff Beck last night!

So I went to see Jeff Beck play in Dublin last night. He was great, of course. For my money, still the best guitarist playing today*, and he's pushing 70.

Anyway, I was staying in a nearby hotel, and after the gig I stopped in a craft beer pub around the corner from the venue for a pint or two. Around midnight, I was sitting at the bar, reading a book, when a bunch of people arrived and started taking the stools beside me. I had an initial grump that my nice quiet reading and drinking corner had been disturbed, and I looked up to see who the intruders were.

It was Jeff Beck and his band, ordering some Guinness.

I almost crapped myself. I had a few seconds of panic wondering what to do, then I grabbed my ticket for the gig and asked him to sign it. His minder took the ticket, but it all turned into a bit of a scrum as a lot of people in the pub had been at the gig, and they all started mobbing him. When things calmed down, the minder was very kind and thanked me for being patient, and Jeff signed my ticket, posed for a photo (which the minder took) and chatted for a minute or two. I say chatted, but it was mostly me gushing about how much of a fan I am (and I really, really am). Jeff seemed not terribly comfortable with people fawning over him, but he was very gracious about it all.

Anyway, it was very cool, and I thought the Guitar Room was the place to share it. Here's a pic:

*EVH in his prime was untouchable, but I don't think anyone has been as consistently good, and developed so much over the years, as Jeff Beck.

Totally awesome. I've heard he really is a nice guy, but you have to talk to him about hot rods or something not related to his stardom to get him to open up.

BTW, I had a very similar experience with Lemmy at the Rainbow. His minder kept me away, but I sent over a drink and Lemmy told the minder to bring me over and we chatted and got some photos.

I know a former tour manager who told me different about Jeff but hell that was 45 years ago.

Yeah, I wish I could make it to the US for one of those shows, but I can't justify the expense. I'm hoping they'll film one or all of them for a DVD.

I mentioned the tour to him, and he said he'd work on his beard.

Fantastic story! What a score on the pic!

I don't think there is any doubt that he is the most consistent and continuously evolving for the better famous guitar player on the planet.

JB is still one of the all time greats . His talent vs his household name appeal is vastly different , which in a way is a shame . He's very well known in the guitar circles though . Seen him once front the front row at a casino . Priceless ...

I met JB in a tuning/warm up room before a concert in 2009. We had a few drinks and they told him it was time for the show and he told em hold on. He told me to get where I was going and then he'd start the show.
Pretty cool of him I thought

And from the land of crazy bizarre musical knowledge: Jeff Beck created the drum beat for "Superstition" with Stevie Wonder and Jeff was originally supposed to record it. But apparently took too long and Steve did it at Barry Gordy's insistence. Jeff ended up using another one of Stevie's songs on Blow by Blow.

    Cool stuff.

Amazing how Beck is touring now, he rarely toured in the 80's and 90's. I wish Beck would get Page to do some shows together. Looking forward to the ZZ top tour!

Hmmm...be careful what you wish for. As much of a Page fan as I am (and I'm one of the biggest) Jeff would blow Jimmy completely off the stage. Jimmy is not now, nor has he ever been in the same technical league as Jimmy as a guitarist, especially since Jimmy broke his finger in 1975. Jimmy reached his technical peak in 1973 (the period reflected in The Song Remains The Same) and even then he really couldn't keep up with Jeff. They are good together for a one or two song encore where Jimmy plays mostly rhythm (like the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony), but there is no way they could double bill and/or play a whole concert together like Jeff did recently with Clapton or Winwood.
