Default Play the Crossroads solo off the top of your head

And our resident guitarist obliges. There's a couple of "muffs" but it pretty much sounds spot on to me.
The only genre I really know is Van Halen.

I have heard this a bunch of times , but it never gets old . Eddie is pretty much put on the spot and yet , he comes through shining as always . There is a lot of soul in those notes ...

Big fucking deal...I can play the intro to Runnin' with the Devil off the top of my head, and I don't see you fuckers paying me any homage.

Don't let anyone fool you, that Open E on the bass is a bitch to play.

When I was a kid, I read that he had learned the solo note-for-note. I had no choice but to take it as a challenge upon myself. I took at least a full month at about 17 years old and learned each phrase one single note at a time. That has paid off for me, 25+ years later and I can still play it. It is an epochal piece.

To actually hear Ed play it himself -- NOTE-FOR-NOTE -- was mind blowing.

The big difference was that I used highly accurate tab (this one was actually correct) and a tape machine that I could abuse the pause and rewind buttons. Ed did it BY EAR -- just like he did when he was a kid faking his way through his piano recitals having never learned to read sheet music.

Just more evidence that he had so many traits similar to Mozart.

EVH was at his peak post 1985, in terms of live playing.
A few months after this recording, he play the "Live Without A Net" show in New Haven. His solo on "5150" shows the same kind of focus and clarity as this rendition of Crossroads. A genius, no doubt.

I'm a bit sceptic about the "piano recital" without knowing to sigh-read. Several people have expressed some doubts about the truthfulness of this story. They had to sigh-read for the "Big Bad Bill" recordings. Donn Landee or TT could put to rest once and for all the "does EVH know how to sight-read" question.

No offense, but the piano recital tale is utter and complete bullshit. Not a dig at you for repeating it, it's the story they put out there, but no fucking way, it's impossible to be in piano recitals and not read sheet music.

Actually it's easier than you think. I started on piano and guitar about 5 mounths later and I couldn't read music until I was 13. But I could easily play jump, I'll wait, and love walks in. As well as almost any Jon Cain tune. (Who can't)

Just takes practice and a hell of a good memory if you write something.

I think playing jump by memory is very different than interpreting notes and cues on sheet music. Can't fake that. The arrangements have very specific differences.

I think DD means an official piano recital competition where sight-reading is something you actually have to do in order to win. They will put something in front of you on sheet music and expect you to play it without knowing it in advance.

    Correct on both counts.

Sight-reading sheet music is art unto itself. Dissecting sheet music is what most people do and have always done -- "this is that chord, and this is the next arpeggio -- ok, got it." I can dissect sheet music -- very slowly and arduously but cannot sight-read sheet music to save my life unless it's "Mary Had a Little Lamb."

Edward was not entered into sight-reading competitions. His piano competitions were annuals. Each student learned a different piece of music and at the end of the year, they'd essentially put on a concert for all of the parents.

Ed was not just given a sheet of music by a teacher and told to go away and learn it. The teacher walked him through each part of each piece while Ed watched his hands and listened. Once you do that long enough you just piece together all of the pieces of the puzzle and you've got the entire song down.

Of course, Edward knows just like everyone knows that the treble clef lines are Every Good Boy Does Fine (EGBDF) and the spaces are FACE. I'm sure like almost any grade schooler, he could've used that knowledge to go in deep to figure out a specific chord -- but arduously note by note.

The story of his not ever being able to sight-read sheet music holds up. The only way he got through those recitals (three straight years of them) was that they give you basically an entire year to learn a piece. With that much time, and certainly with Ed's level of talent, it's pretty obvious you can learn a piece of music without sight reading and watching and listening to someone else play it.

My own son at 11 -- when I try to tell him how to play something, he almost always gives me the guitar and says, "Just play it for me real quick and let me watch." I give the guitar back and he nails it.

    It's not bullshit.
