    Fantastic Four

‘Fantastic Four’ Writer Promises Less ‘Goofy’ Reboot; Talks Sequel Plans

After a few years in development, Josh Trank’s Fantastic Four reboot finally began filming on location in Louisiana at the beginning of this week. Scripted by Simon Kinberg, the film will be an origin story starring a younger team than was seen in the last two Fantastic Four movies, and has been described as a “coming of age” tale. The assembled cast includes Miles Teller (Footloose) as Reed Richards, Jamie Bell (Jumper) as Ben Grimm, Michael B. Jordan (Fruitvale Station) as Johnny Storm and Kate Mara (Transcendence) as Sue Storm.

Whereas Tim Story’s two Fantastic Four movies were based mostly on the Earth-616 version of the team, Kinberg has said that the reboot will be more inspired by the Ultimate Fantastic Four comics. Trank’s first feature film, Chronicle, could almost be considered a prototype for Fantastic Four, since it also told the story of a group of young friends being gifted with incredible powers, and delivered the narrative in a very grounded and realistic style.

Speaking to Collider, Kinberg described the first few days on set with Trank and the cast of actors, which also includes Toby Kebbell (The Counselor) as Doctor Doom, Tim Blake Nelson (The Incredible Hulk) as Harvey Elder and Reg E. Cathey (The Wire) as Franklin Storm.

According to Kinberg, production is off to a good start:

“The energy on set is great. Josh Trank is fantastic on set. Really in command, really clear, and the thing that is most unique or defining about the new Fantastic Four is the tone. We’re approaching it in a much more realistic, grounded, science rather than science-fiction way. The playfulness or goofiness of those other movies is very, very different from what we’re trying to do.

“Just seeing those actors and seeing Josh, the way he’s articulating the tone and the way the actors are executing it gives me a lot of confidence that we’ll actually be able to make a cool Fantastic Four movie.”

It makes sense for Trank and Kinberg to try and differentiate their Fantastic Four movie as much as possible from the two previous movies, which embraced the comic book superhero style with plenty of elaborate action scenes, matching uniforms for the newly-founded team of superheroes, and of course an origin story that takes place out in space. Kinberg hasn’t revealed exactly how the Fantastic Four will get their powers in the reboot, but he has hinted that will “involve some sort of scientific travel,” which makes it likely that they will go with the Ultimate origin story involving a malfunctioning teleporter.

Kinberg also confirmed that Fantastic Four will get a 3D release, as is pretty standard for Hollywood blockbusters these days, but it will be post-converted rather than shot in 3D. The writer added that he hopes the 3D will make the film more immersive, so that, “you feel like you’re with the characters looking at themselves and looking at each other with these bizarre powers.”

The X-Men franchise is already a big earner for Twentieth Century Fox and the studio has a 2017 release date staked out for Fantastic Four 2. When asked if he planned ahead for sequels whilst writing the script for the first movie, Kinberg said that the sequel obviously isn’t guaranteed yet, but he’s optimistic that it will happen and has been writing the characters with a future in mind:

“If it’s a terrible disaster I don’t know that you ever get a shot no matter what the date is, but they have a lot of confidence in the movie and we have confidence in the movie.

“You want to tell a coherent, complete story in each movie, but you can also start to think about and build toward how these characters evolve five years from now, ten years from now, and that’s just a cool way to tell a story. It’s not that different as a sort of episodic storytelling than what comics do or what our favorite TV shows do. You get to project beyond the two hours of the movie… I think actually in some cases what it helps me do as a writer is it forces me to ask certain questions I may not do if I was just telling a one-off movie. Meaning I have to ask questions of, ‘What is this gonna mean to them when they’re 30, 40, 50 years old? Who are these characters going to become?’”

For what it’s worth, the early reactions to X-Men: Days of Future Past (which was also scripted by Kinberg) have been extremely positive, and the first Fantastic Four movie performed moderately well at the box office despite not being a property that the average audience member would likely be familiar with. There has already been plenty of backlash from hardcore fans over some of the casting decisions, but since regular comic book readers only make up a very small minority of the total moviegoing public, the recent controversy is unlikely to have much impact on Fantastic Four‘s eventual box office performance.

Four days into filming is probably a little too soon to start making judgement calls on whether Fantastic Four will turn out to be a huge success or a total disaster, but it will definitely be interesting to see Trank’s grounded, realistic approach to creating superheroes with bizarre and incredible powers when the first trailer arrives.

Fantastic Four is out in theaters on June 19, 2015.

I'd rather see the old cast back. I really liked the first two movies.

Is Marvel Intentionally Sabotaging Its Relationship With Fox?

This summer, Marvel celebrates their 75th anniversary, having opened up shop in 1939 when the comics introduced Namor, The Sub-Mariner. Oodles of culturally-significant characters later, and Marvel has risen not only to the top of the comic book world, but also Hollywood. Marvel's got several 75th anniversary plans, including the release of a new 75th anniversary magazine. You can see the cover below. But why don't you stop and think which characters are missing?

Hm. Where are the X-Men, the children of the atom who have starred in a spectacular seven hit movies? And where are the Fantastic Four, the team that debuted in the early sixties and laid the groundwork for the modern Marvel superhero, becoming one of the industry's first-ever teams? It makes sense that, in lieu of these characters, you'd have Spider-Man, Thor and Captain America. But Nova? Iron Fist? Rocket Raccoon??

Fans understand that, while Marvel makes their own movies, the rights to Spider-Man belong at Sony, and the rights to X-Men and Fantastic Four belong to Fox. While it's in their best interests to support the characters they've leased to another studio, their biggest priority in Hollywood comes from launching Captain America, Thor, Iron Man, Hulk, Guardians Of The Galaxy and The Avengers. And yet, there's Spidey on the front page, even though his movie rights belong to Sony.

It sounds as if there's something brewing between Marvel and Fox. News leaked this weekend that in the next couple of months, Marvel is putting both Fantastic Four and Ultimate Fantastic Four on a hiatus. It makes sense to lose one of them, as the team isn't necessarily one of Marvel's highest sellers, but both? Furthermore, Marvel artists reportedly have been told to avoid using Fantastic Four characters in company artwork. This includes characters like Silver Surfer and Doctor Doom, both of whom have rich, colorful histories away from the Fantastic Four but are nonetheless under the Fox umbrella.

Canceling the comic doesn't make a ton of sense on the surface, because the movies should promote the comics; the comics' fanbase is not nearly big enough to represent a solid chunk of the moviegoing audience. But if it's true that Marvel is actively taking down Fantastic Four artwork around their own offices, then it sounds like Marvel wants to loudly declare they're not behind 2015's The Fantastic Four. Doing their part to pretend the movie doesn't exist not only frees up resources to promote more in-house Marvel films (Ant-Man supposedly arrives about a month after The Fantastic Four next summer) but it adds to the general negativity surrounding the film. It's not enough for Fox to have an underperforming movie: the logic behind these moves could be that if Marvel stays silent, the Marvel fans that guide the word-of-mouth will keep Josh Trank's upcoming The Fantastic Four from being profitable, leading to Fox surrendering the rights to Marvel.

The situation is similar with X-Men. Marvel couldn't cancel the X-books, because there are so many, and they are some of the industry's top sellers. But one of the unusual nuggets that Marvel keeps from Fox and Sony are the merchandising rights. If any other studio owned the merchandising rights to someone else's blockbuster, they'd start churning out toys immediately. Instead, you can't go to the store to find a single toy or gizmo tied to X-Men: Days Of Future Past because Marvel flat-out didn't make them.

In their eyes, they are powerful enough that their smaller endeavors (like comics that move 60,000 copies a month) serve as free promotion to these big screen adventures. And if there's no merchandise that convinces people to sample Days Of Future Past a second time, then X-Men becomes a property too costly to maintain. It used to be that a big movie necessitated a major, audience-friendly change of the status-quo in the comics, like recently when Spider-Man "rose from the dead" in time for The Amazing Spider-Man 2. But while we tried our best to make this simple, a fan who enjoyed Days Of Future Past would step into a comic shop right now and find X-Men comics that have NOTHING in common with what they just saw on the big screen.

Meanwhile, you will be able to find the above, and more, in toy shops when Guardians Of The Galaxy when it arrives this August. You'll also be able to walk into a comic shop and find a Guardians comic that, as of now, accurately represents the roster of the team from the movies. And there's that 75th anniversary magazine cover, which somehow finds space for THREE Guardians, but no X-Men.

    Interesting, right?

If the rumors about the cancellation of Fantastic Four comics are true, this would represent a spectacularly bitter freezeout from one studio to the next. Oh, and in case you were wondering? Namor, Marvel's first hero and a character still in rotation in the comics, is also not on this cover. His film rights are owned by Universal. It's looking more and more like Marvel is being seduced by the movies, and surrendering their legacy as a result, one issue at a time.

Take a First Look at The Fantastic Four Costume Design!

Our first official look at the costume design for 20th Century Fox’s upcoming reboot of The Fantastic Four has arrived! Collider debuted the above image (which you can click on for a larger version), showing off star Michael B. Jordan in the outfit he’ll be wearing as Johnny Storm. Although the look may not be the blue unstable molecule jumpsuit that fans are familiar with, director John Trank tells the outlet that that’s because he’s going for “a hard sci-fi take” that will “fall in line more with a Cronenberg-ian science fiction tale of something horrible happening to your body and [it] transforming out of control”.

Set to hit theaters on August 7, The Fantastic Four will offer a contemporary re-imagining of Marvel’s original and longest-running superhero team. The story centers on four young outsiders who teleport to an alternate and dangerous universe, which alters their physical form in shocking ways. Their lives irrevocably upended, the team must learn to harness their daunting new abilities and work together to save Earth from a former friend turned enemy.

In addition to offering a heavy science fiction tone, the film will, according to writer and producer Simon Kinberg, explore the idea of a superhero family.

“Most comic book superhero movies are about a superhero protagonist or a superhero group,” says Kinberg, who also confirms that the “Ultimate Fantastic Four” comics are serving as the film’s primary influence. “But they’re never really exploring what it is to be family… That’s something we really spent a long time talking about and putting into the film. I think that will differentiate us as well from all of the different superheroes and superhero groups out there.”

Jordan joins Jamie Bell, Kate Mara and Miles Teller as Marvel’s First Family with Toby Kebbell set to play Dr. Doom alongside Reg E. Cathey as Dr. Franklin Storm and Tim Blake Nelson as Harvey Elder, aka The Mole Man. The first trailer for The Fantastic Four is expected to debut before the studio’s Kingsman: The Secret Service when it hits theaters February 13.

For a movie coming out in the not too distant future, there is no hype about this at all. This thing is going to tank badly.

As a kid, the Fantastic Four was my favorite. I had one of those "decisions" books that takes you to different pages and a different story based upon what decision you make if anybody remembers those?

I wore that sucker out, love the Fantastic Four, and the two movies were fucktasticly bad, and I don't have a lot of hope for this re-boot.

How can you have a made for the screen villain like Dr. Doom and still not make a good movie?

I'm hopeful. I think it's going to be done very well.

Folks need to realize that this movie is based more on the Ultimate line of comics and not the ones we grew up on.

Plus they are saying that this is more of a science fiction movie over the super hero adaption. I'm looking forward to what they do.
