Default Librarians pressed to ban Dr. Seuss Hop on Pop for violent undertones

Dr. Seuss is safe at the Toronto Public Library at least for the time being.

But one of his books was targeted for banning. A letter of complaint filed in March with the facility petitioned for the removal of all copies of the 1963 book penned by Dr. Seuss, Hop on Pop, United Press International reported.

    Why?

It promotes violence, the letter of complaint read.

The complainant said all copies of the book should be taken out of the library because its text encourages children to use violence against their fathers,

UPI reported. The complainant also wanted an apology from the librarians to all fathers in the Toronto area and for the library to pay for damages resulting from the book, the letter stated, UPI reported.

The Materials Review Committee responded just recently: No.

In its decision, members wrote: The book is a humorous and well-loved childrens book designed to engage children while teaching them reading skills.

Besides, the members point out, the children are actually told not to hop on pop, said a document from the Materials Review Committee, which was linked on the UPI report.

Complaint Asks Library To Remove Hop On Pop Because It Promotes Violence Against Dads

When youve got a system that allows the general public to air grievances, its pretty much guaranteed that there will be some off-the-wall issues. Or at least, problems that seem to not be all that serious: the Toronto Public

Library received a complaint asking for librarians to remove Dr. Seuss Hop On Pop, claiming that it promotes violence against well, pops, dear old dad, father dearest. You get it.

That being said, we are very pro-pops here at Consumerist, pro-parent, really, and would never want any dad to be harmed as a result of reading Hop On Pop.

Moving along yes, this is a real(ish) issue, according to a document the library posted online with seven books that the library was asked to remove over the year (via UPI).

The complaint says the 1963 Seuss favorite encourages children to use violence against their fathers, according to the complaint.

Whoever wrote it asked that the library should apologize to Toronto fathers and pay for any damages resulting from the book.

That being said, the Materials Review Committee has made the decision to keep the book in the childrens collection, saying that its humorous, well-loved and that it has appeared on many Best of childrens book lists.

And besides, anyone whos actually read Hop On Pop instead of rushing to make a frivolous complaint and waste everyones time would know, at the end, the book tells kids not to actually jump on dad. A very important life lesson.

Green Eggs and Ham is next too much cholesterol.
