Is there like a rule or something that he's not allowed to play anything remotely Van Halenish? I mean, I would understand it if he worked for Sweetwater and only played drop D tuning shit and was asked to do the review, but come on dude, you work for EVH! Play something EVHish! People aren't buying that guitar to play some slash metal crap, they buy it because they want to sound like the Man.

    I'm sure it's a copyright issue.

Chris seems like a nice dude, and he's certainly got technical ability, but his demos for EVH products flat out suck.

That's cool, but then he shouldn't be trying to sell people stuff to sound like Ed. It's like watching an infomercial for a BBQ grill and they keep talking about quality veggie wraps.

I totally get what you're saying, but you have to also realize that EVH gear is also being marketed to a wider field than just the EVH fan.

I don't think that's it frankly. I've heard before that the reasons people don't play actual songs in a lot of these demo videos is they legally cannot.

If someone is demoing a striped Van Halen guitar it goes without saying playing some VH riffs is mandatory. Who cares if you can play nu metal garbage on it, you can do that on any guitar.

I think jimi is right...there might be a copyright issue of some sort when it comes to selling a product or maybe associating the music with the store that is selling the product.

I do have to remind myself that we live in a completely different generation of guitar players and music in general. I'm 42 and I'm not sure how old this cat is, but either his age or his personal taste in music make him play the way he plays. I can't expect everyone to care as much about Ed's music as I do. Not everyone really wants to learn how to play it right or get super close to the bone tonewise.

A lot of people like Yngwie, Nickelback, Puddle of Mud, Staind, Jason Mraz, Lady Gaga...whatever. I can't expect everyone to like everything I like to the degree that I like it.

Oh yeah I get that, and that's all great when he's doing a demo for a Wolfgang, a pedal, or even the EVH amps. But when it's a striped guitar meant to look like a EVH guitar, I think the only target market for those are going to be Van Halen fans.

As for the copyright, I'm not sure that makes total sense either. Eddie wrote the songs and the riffs, so why would he have a problem with it? I've seen an official demo for the Seymour Duncan '78 pickup that is ALL VH music. If they can do it, surely the EVH brand can.

Even if that's still frowned upon, there's nothing stopping him playing some runs similar to Ed that aren't complete songs. It would at least give people an idea.

In the end it isn't that big of a deal, obviously, I just thought it was really strange.

Doesn't matter if Ed wrote them and it's his guitars. There are still performance copyrights.

And now I don't want to buy a guitar with a tone knob. Nobody uses them. Inside joke? The joke is he doesn't know why Ed uses a tone knob.

Tell ya what. I have a stripe series and a 5150 III combo. What VH songs you want to hear? I'll put clips on soundcloud. I just posted On Fire using my USA Stealth with the combo and the backing track. One take mistakes and all.
