If I missed a thread that answered this, please feel free to point me to it.

Anyway, I have a MIM Wolfgang Special. I love the guitar, but am not satisfied with the sound I'm getting through my amp (it's a Marshall combo unit). The same amp with my Westone (equipped with a Frankenstein humbucker) and my Telecaster (which has a DiMarzio single coil at the bridge and a DiMarzio humbucker at the neck) sounds great. However, the Wolfgang sounds weaker, and not nearly as clear as either guitar, even after I fiddle with the amp settings. So here are my questions: 1. I assume the pickups in the Special are not the same as in the USA, correct? 2. Would there be an improvement if I installed the Wolfgang pickups from the EVH Gear website?

I'm no great player (certainly not compared to some of the very talented people in this forum), but I know how I want my guitars to sound, and the Special is not getting it done... which is a shame, because I love to play it- it feels great. Any input would be appreciated.
I know that some MIM owners have reported that their pickups are muddy (which I believe some people here have fixed by putting something in the tone pot circuit, I will look into that), but others (like myself) have hot and fiery MIM pickups.

I would try and cut the tone pot out of the circuit first and see if that immediately fixed what you're hearing.

Check your pickup height. I raised up my neck pickup height (moving it closer to the strings) this improved to bite on the guitar quite a bit. Good Luck!

Haha, no no, I've met someone who's become a good friend that does this. He's very talented. I've been working a real adult job doing I.T. the last couple months, no time for luthier school after fitness and fun come into play!

    A, nope!
    B, well, I won't, but he will

I've just been browsing around looking at things just to stay up to date. It seems MusicMan has discountinued the Axis line this year. I can't find any of the standard model anywhere online (new, of course).

I'm not trying to buy one right now, but it's concerning that it appears the line has been discontinued. It just makes me kind of sad, ya know?

I'm trying to avoid picking one up right now because I have the double coming soon.

On one hand it wouldn't surprise me if EBMM decided to focus on the slew of new guitars they just released and their very successful signature models. On the other hand, I'd imagine the whole Axis line is still selling pretty decently, and just 2 months ago they published an Axis buyer's guide.

I'd say they're probably producing fewer standard Axis guitars to make room on the assembly line for all the newer models recently introduced.

Slowly but surely prepping this body for paint. I've only had it since December.

Two applications of grain filler, a coat of stain, and hopefully this weekend I will have time for a couple of coats of sanding sealer. Then I think I'm ready for black. Then the fun begins.

Jedi, MinWax is oil based, and may cause problems, further down the coating line, if your not using an entire oil based coating system.
MinWax contains oil, and wax, two things that don't get along with lacquer top coats.

Thanks for the heads up turnbuckle! I wonder if I should let it dry longer before hitting it with lacquer sanding dealer and duplicolor. I know a friend of mine and a bunch of others on the frankenstrat Facebook group have used this stain and then lacquer products with no problem. Hmmm.

The problems may come later, or much later, or they may not show up at all.
Being a USAF trained painter, and woodworker of 35 years, I have developed my own paranoias.
Oils with oils. Water, alcohol, and lacquers with lacquer.
I would have skipped the stain, and went from filler to sanding sealer.
(But I work in a shop, and I'm spoiled. I completely admire you brave souls that do this in the garage.)

I think I've seen you at tdpri, they got a decent rattle can forum there.

BTW, that is one beautiful piece of wood.

...it takes someone very secure in their manhood to compliment another man's wood.but I also concur with TB, Jedi.

With that body as is, I would be hard-pressed to do anything but turn it into a "naked Frankie".

Yaminub and Scotty, thanks for the feedback. Taking the tone pot out of the wiring is a no-go for me, as when I play on clean channel, I use the tone pot quite a bit. I'll try fiddling with the pickup height once I get it back from the guitar shop. I guess my question still is, though, are the pickups in the MIM Specials different than in the Made in USA Wolfgangs?

Short story- I had previously taken it to a national guitar chain for a setup (rhymes with Mittar Center). The local branch had a guy working there for a long time who was really, really good. He left, however, and the guy who took over did a hatchet job on my Wolfgang. Long story short, the trem (guitar refuses to stay in tune), the D-Tuna (you needed two hands to get it pulled out), and the neck were a mess. I got a recommendation for a good, independent, local shop and the independent guy looked it over for like ten seconds before going, "Woah, buddy. What happened here?" Lesson learned.
