    Default Seriously?

    Yes, Seriously?

I tripped over this clip of a recent "Sammy and friends" show, playing "Poundcake". Now honestly, I really try to stay out of all of the banter about VH classic vs. Van Hagar vs. Sammy/Mike are better off without VH, blah blah, and after viewing the clip below, regardless of Chickenfoot, etc., I simply have one thing to say:

BULLSHIT. Vic Johnson and Jason Bonham are simply no match for Ed and Al, either that or I am hearing shit (literally) that no-one else is. What do y'all think?

    That was horrible.

It's bad enough when The Boss or John Mayer butcher a VH tune, but in this one there's actually two former members contributing to the butchering of a VH tune.

Not sure how Sam and Mike can be okay getting up there and playing this.

That was pathetic, obviously Vic isn't in the same category as ed but if you are Sammy or mike you kind of have to know that so I don't know why you would have him play that. Its just an embarrassment to all involved.
Janie Liszewski did the IMPOSSIBLE she helped Eddie Van Halen get better. Deal with it.

Yeah, that's what I don't understand. They've got plenty of material to choose from so why even go there?

Yes, exactly what I was thinking...if they can't do it, please do not even try.

I'll say that the video certainly was not of great quality. The guitar was obviously the loudest thing in the mix (or lack thereof).

Ed is very hard to replicate, we've seen numerous players that are very good that just can't get his groove down. Always amazes me how many people want other guitarist to sound just like Ed. EVH wouldn't be as special if everyone sounded like him.

I can almost only hear the guitar in this clip so I'm not sure I can really assess Sam/Mike/Bonham's performance. Meaning, the sound quality of the recording is bad - it's like a Vic isolated track.

But if your point is that Vic cannot play Poundcake nearly as good as Eddie, then yes, I agree.

Hard to judge much from crappy youtube videos. Even the good ones miss alot. I can't say much about that.

Just wish people would be consistent and have that view about every youtube video. You don't get the true sense, from any artist, from a hand held audience video.

To be fair a lot of people have been doing that with Dave - basing their opinion of his singing on fan shot youtube videos. I'm not defending him, but this is really no different.

As for the guitar playing, I don't need a great sounding recording to tell that it is bad. It just is. Again, Ed is difficult to replicate, but I've heard people do a reasonably good job - even amateurs in their bedroom. I would expect a touring professional to do a better job than that, particularly when he is playing with two former members of the band. If he can't then it's probably best to shelve that tune for something he can play.

Hey guys ripped on Youtube videos of Van Halen in 2011 and 2007 so I think its ok to do it here.

It doesn't sound good. For as much people think Van Halen is Mike harmonies, Eddie and Alex have a lot to say when it comes to the sound.

The Atomic Punks with Mike that was posted a few days ago sounds much better than this.

Sorry if that hurts peoples feelings because one can't be critical of anything that Sam has done post 2004.

It's pretty evident that the entire spectrum of the guitar sound is not being represented with this sad ass quality recording. It's cutting out and distorted as hell. You can't even hear the drums when you see them get hit.

Great example to trash Sam and his band with. That's all these things are ever really all about.

But we gave Dave such a hard time about his awesome, flawless voice...so carry on.

You're kidding right? The guitar is right up front in the "mix." The reason it's "distorted as hell" is that he's got a lot of chorus on it. It's not "cutting out" - he's missing notes. That's why it sounds the way it does.

I'm not interested in trashing Sam and his band. But if something is bad I'm going to point it out, just as I cringe when I hear clips of Ed from 2004. This is a poor performance, regardless of the quality of the video.
