Podcast Interview on VH's early days: Van Halen Rising

    Hi all,

People regularly ask me about what will be included in my forthcoming book on #VanHalen, Van Halen Rising. Here’s a sneak preview of what my years of research — including 200+ interviews with everyone from former band members and club owners to fans and fellow musicians — has uncovered.

DJ Kahuna interviews me about the band’s origins, including the “pre-Van Halen” bands: Genesis, Mammoth and Red Ball Jet. We also cover VH’s early evolution up through its 1978 breakout.

You also can hear tons of unreleased early Van Halen songs.
Please take a listen; I think even the biggest Van Halen fans will learn new things about the band!

Please subscribe/download DJ’s excellent Rock and/or Roll Podcast.

    Thanks! Greg

Looking forward to listening to this! Greg Renoff's VH book is going to be the real deal. A book that focuses on their rise in the '70s is a great idea, and it sounds like Greg is doing a fantastic job with the research.

You're welcome. Thanks for writing the book! Can't wait to read it.

I'm listening to your podcast now, and I can't believe you got into the (literal) fifth member of Van Halen!

I was going to do a short story on their keyboardist (short, only because I don't know much about him), but you beat me to it. I almost named him in my Gazzarri's article on VHND, but I thought I would save mentioning him for a separate story.

I don't think anyone knows that when Dave joined the band, there were already four members, not three. When Mammoth changed their name to VH, there were 5 members in the band at the time. Perhaps you know more about him and are saving it for the book...

Loved the podcast. And realized recently what a great idea your book is to focus on those early years when they were coming up. Can't wait to read it.

Yeah, this is fantastic. I just dropped everything and listened to the whole thing all at once.

Now I must find that 1977 LA Times interview with Michael Anthony.

    Dynamite stuff as usual Greg.

I loved the "Club days" special in "The Inside" years ago, but I've always wanted the full story on the origins in Passadena. Looks like we're gonna get it.......Cant wait!!!!

I've known Greg since college (holy shit that's a long time, Greg). Even back then he had a box of VH boots on cassette. If there's a guy out there that will do justice to chronicling the history of early Van Halen, it's Greg. Looking forward to the book!

I listened to the first 30 minutes of the interview , before I had to run out last night . Great stuff so far !!!

We've been hearing the new book for a while now - and we're all stoked !!!
Any thoughts on the release date , price , and actual size of the finished product ? Not that it matters - sounds like I'll be buying two copies , regardless ...

    Cheers

Listened to the first part and it's interesting how different the band may have sounded if Dave had not entered the picture. Eddie and Alex were into Sabbath and Cream....I have to believe they would never have gotten near the melodic sound they ended up with if not for Dave steering them that way. He hints that Dave may have even had a big hand in bringing in Mike for that vocal ability...thus leading to those great choruses. They actually hint that Mike was not as good as Mark Stone on bass? I know he downplayed the bass ability and suggested it was all for the vocal ability. I was under the impression it was an upgrade on both fronts.

The Ain't Talking Bout Love lick might be a great example. It's an aggressive lick that probably never would have had the catchy melody without Dave. Probably would have been a "metal" tune.

But then again, maybe it was also a combination with Dave and Templeman. They still sound really aggressive with Dave in those club bootlegs. And did Eddie have it in him all along? He did seem to be the one that pushed them in the more pop direction later in the 80s.

Don't want to sound like I'm giving Dave all the credit because without Eddie he would probably sound like Earth Wind and Fire.

I'm also very glad to have someone focus primarily on the band prior to their recorded career. I liked the Dodds book quite a bit, but the most disappointing thing was that, out of a 400 page book, it went from their birth to them being signed by WB in the first 40 pages. It was like the fast-forward button had been pressed. I just assumed this was because everyone involved with the band has been less than forthcoming with info about them...but maybe it was just a matter of hunting those people down and interviewing them.

I mean....they had a keyboard player and were a 5 piece when Dave joined???

I remember reading an interview with Ed where he said something like "we used to have a keyboard player and I hated it because he was always filling the space between the vocal lines where I wanted to fill it."

I assumed this was before Dave joined, but obviously this was not the case.
The only genre I really know is Van Halen.
