    Default 2000-2001 Reunion attempts

Not really a question or news of any kind, but something I find interesting (if anyone agrees and cares to discuss): I still wonder if "Independent's Day" had any truth to it. "Tabula Rasa" and its track listing was probably a load of shit, but then again the title "Red Bull and Pop Tarts," which I believe was included, did reappear in Dave’s current “Over the Rainbow Bar & Grille” project (or on “The Roth Show,” I can’t remember). Couldn’t possibly be a coincidence. But then again Michael Anthony said they only did 4-5 songs, and we know “Tattoo” and “STW” are two of them per Ray Luzier’s recent input.

“Independent’s Day”…what an interesting way to spell it. And it was always spelled that way when it was mentioned. Seemed like it must be legit, because if someone just made up that title to start a rumor why wouldn’t they just spell it “independence?” Why the apostrophe-S? Maybe, like the Jon Voight Seinfeld episode—that’s the “genius” of it.

And does anyone have mp3s of Dave’s web site messages where he addresses the fans (circa 2001)? If so, please PM me. I have them but they’re barely audible.

I thought it was an interesting play on words too. Pretty slick, and you can guess what it is about.

Though, the whole rumored album may likely be BS, ala Van Coverdale, and the rumor-starter spelled in wrong... there/their ... your/you're.

I was just thinking about this the other day while listening to Stay Frosty. Was Stay Frosty one of those 5?

We all remember the remarks Dave made not that long ago (last year or so) about not really recording anything new with Van Halen for over a decade, or something along those lines. Well, was this Dave doing his usual "I'll confuse them with conflicting facts" thing, or is it true? So when were the originals on ADKOT written?

We're talking about You and Your Blues, China Town, As Is, Honeybabysweetiedoll, and Stay Frosty, right? So maybe these were all written or at least attempted back in 2000-2001, and then re-worked for ADKOT? That's why I'm curious about too.

Dave wrote Stay Frosty. I think that was pretty recent.
I asked a ref if he could give me a technical foul for thinking bad things about him. He said, of course not. I said, well, I think you stink. And he gave me a technical. You can't trust em. -

Definitely think HBSD was. Just listen to "Flex" or the chorus in "Scarecrow."

Yeah, Stay Frosty was one of the brand new ones.

Honeybabysweetiedoll goes way back to 1980 , you can sort of hear parts of it on the WACF demos bootleg on the instrumental , " Act Like It Hurts ". Plus, some of the lyrics had been used as " one-liners " in some of DLR's interviews throughout the years.

Chinatown was listed on a VHND article back in 1999 or so as a new song title DLR was working on for a new album that never came out.

DLR's well known statement about " the hands on the clock stopped ", or whatever he said back then, was retracted later on when he later said that he kinda overhyped things, and that what they recorded was in " crappy demo form ", and that we weren't missing out on much.
" On a scale that ranges from deep dark depression to rip roaring fun ... most people idle between pissed off ...and not too pissed off " DLR 1997

" I am the danger ... I am the one who knocks " Walter White 2011

"Act Like It Hurts"--like many others have said--yes, similar, but definitely not the same thing.

"China Town"--one of the demos along with that song "Stomping Grounds." Ahhh. Totally forgot about that.

And when did Dave retract that statement?

DLR wrote Stay Frosty, I think that is the one song on the record in which he presented a song to the band instead of the other way around (however, total conjecture based upon interviews, that is all).
Taylor Swift is nice to look at. Adele can sing.

I would love to hear that 2001 stuff. I feel like Jeff mentioned that he heard the songs but he doesn't want to disclose anything specific about them.

I think what Dave meant was they hadn't sat down and wrote together. I think all the songs were written (musically) and when they were ready for lyrics, they called Dave.

I think it's the same riff, just sped up. The very first time I heard it I caught it right away.....If it's not the same riff it's pretty close.

This is exactly right. Dave and Ed haven't sat down and written together for almost a decade. They send demos back and forth to get the finished product.

Chinatown was rumored to be a leftover from the VHIII (part 2) sessions. I think it was Gary's brother that would post on the Pleasure Dome about songs they were working on, and what he described one song as having an alien-sounding tapping intro into a heavy and speedy riff fits the bill for Chinatown...but it also fits the bill for Hot for Teacher and a half dozen other VH songs, so you never know.

As for the song titles being legit...I kind of doubt it, but as you mention with the Red Bull and Pop Tarts title, either Dave did that as a joke (because you know he sees the rumors) or it was formerly an idea he used on a VH demo. As we saw with Dave's videos on the writing for ADKOT, he had some of his lyrics written before he even heard the music. So he takes concepts and translates them to the appropriate music when it presents itself.
CNN may think my opinion matters, but you shouldn't.

He actually played a snippet of Red Bull and Pop Tarts on last season Roth show as background music if memory serves.

I think he recorded it with John 5 as part of their album they recorded and haven't released.

These guys and their unreleased tunes. I understand some are unreleased for a reason, as in they are not good enough. But all of them can't be stinkers. Release it for crying out loud.

Dave's Dreidel... doesn't it make you wonder if they're waiting for the right magic time and the right magic moment which doen't come? ... Of course by then, they're already on to another project. /(",)\
