Default 40 Years Ago Today – Van Halen Hits the Sunset Strip!

Everyone, today is quite a historic anniversary...

Forty years ago today, Van Halen broke out of the backyard party scene—playing their very first concert on the famous Sunset Strip!

Their gig at Gazzarri’s on April 4th, 1974 was their first performance in Hollwood. Landing this gig helped catapult the band out of Pasadena’s backyard beer bashes, and thrust them headfirst into Tinseltown! This historic date was a true milestone—their gateway to playing more area clubs on the strip—such as the Starwood and the Whisky—and ultimately being discovered. Here is the story…

The MUST-SEE story & early photos:

I feel all those anniversaries are a bit like a wake or something. It's always gonna be the anniversary of some album or some tour. It's a bit tough to go from them being an active band to a band just celebrating anniversaries of past glories. It would be a bit like celebrating your college graduation every 5 years.

Tomorrow is the 37th anniversary of Dave and Ed having pizza and beers at a restaurant.

They are still rocking it out. Formed in LA in 1979, this has to be them.

Taylor Swift is nice to look at. Adele can sing.

Emperor Brett - "I can't believe you guys are analyzing song-by-song Van Halen III? What next, analyzing the script of Stroker Ace looking for some shred of Citizen Kane?"

David Lee Roth did the impossible. He made Van Halen better. Deal with it!

    Great Article Jeff!
So I read a bit on Bill Gazzarri and was surprised to read that he passed away on March 16 1991
Does anyone know if Wolfgang "William" Van Halen born on March 16 1991 was named after Bill Gazzari?
I remember seeing Eddie once saying on TV That "Wolfgang means William in German" or something of some sort like that (can't remember), "So when he gets older and doesn't like Wolfgang he can change his name to Bill Bill Van Halen"

I would start chanting this instead:

I'm sure the guys appreciate Gazzari for booking them but I don't think he had such an impact on their lives that Ed would go and name his son after him (even if it's his middle name.)

This is very cool - straight from Dave!

David Lee Roth enjoyed our article 40 Years Ago Today – Van Halen Hits the Sunset Strip! so much so that he sent us an exclusive audio describing how important it was for Van Halen to spend years playing Gazzarris in the mid seventies. He calls it their ”college of musical knowledge.” Listen to Dave’s 5-minute recording HERE.

Big thanks to Diamond Dave for sharing this with us!
