The economic case for taxing meat

As tax season ramps up, we're bound to hear proposals aimed at making the revenue system simpler and more efficient. A perennial is the "sin tax." Rather than tax earnings—when we really want people to earn money—why not tax things we don't want people to do? Add duties to cigarettes, alcohol, and carbon dioxide to slow people’s smoking, drinking, and polluting, and you'll do them and the world a favor while raising revenue for schools, hospitals, and roads.

But why stop there? It's time to add one more sin to the list of habits that should be taxed: excessive meat consumption.

It's been brought up, but if we do, it just will cement how short sighted we are.

The United States is a service economy, absolutely dependent on the free flow of information, to infringe upon that would be idiocy.
Taylor Swift is nice to look at. Adele can sing.

Which is precisely why some goofball in Washington will propose it.

You say that like this government doesn't have a track record of stupid decisions.

The internet has its own law preventing use from being taxed, though it was last extended in 2007 (http://thomas.loc.gov/cgi-bin/bdquery/z?d110:H.R.3678:) and is due to expire again in November of 2014. If Congress can't get their shit together to extend it again, which isn't an extraordinary thought, then maybe we will see some internet taxes.

Taxing things in order to nudge people into not doing those things is always a ruse for money and not about providing a disincentive.
