Default 28 Years ago today: First show of the 5150 Tour!

still kind of shocked that no audio has ever surfaced from this show.

Great tour, band played awesome and were full of energy!

Loved the album (still in my all time top 3), loved the energy and the vibe the band had at the time.

Gonna listen to Unleashed today to celebrate!

Love me some 5150, but hell, I wouldn't even say it is one of Van Halen's top 3.

    But it's all subjective!
Taylor Swift is nice to look at. Adele can sing.

Emperor Brett - "I can't believe you guys are analyzing song-by-song Van Halen III? What next, analyzing the script of Stroker Ace looking for some shred of Citizen Kane?"

David Lee Roth did the impossible. He made Van Halen better. Deal with it!

    Preferred pronouns: he/him/his

Hurricane Halen - Let's all gingery touch our sword tips!!!

I was 13 when it came out so it was right in my wheelhouse so to speak.

I still listen to something off of that disk every few days (at least) and the song 5150 is the most played song on my IPOD (along with Dreams and Summer Nights) so I have ALWAYS loved that album.

it was a great time to be a fan.

I was pretty done with Van Halen once 5150 came out. Although I originally thought Sammy Hagar might be a great fit for the band, when the single for WCTBL came out and then the album itself, I and most people I knew who were into VH just hated it right down to the terrible production. So when the tour was announced and tickets went on sale for the LA shows, I sat it out and felt even more secure in my decision once the tour started when I started hearing word that they were playing few Roth era songs, doing Sammy covers and pulling fans onstage to mock Roth when they performed "Jump."

But when the show dates arrived over the first week of July which I always took off as a Summer vacation week, I got the itch to go, as I'd never missed at least catching one show during an LA area tour stop since the 1st album and I was really curious to see for myself how well they'd pull it off live. So on a whim, I wound up driving to the Forum alone (none of my friends wanted to see "Van Hagar") early the afternoon of Wed, 7/2 for the first show of their LA stand and managed to score an excellent single seat in the 18th row floor from a scalper in the parking lot.

Turned out the show was a lot better than I expected although I'd still rank it below almost all the Roth era shows I caught between '77 - '84. I was somewhat taken aback by how dull the stage design was compared to the outrageous productions the band had on their previous 80's tours. On the other hand, I was pleasantly surprised how well Hagar fit in with the band, how much energy he had, how well he sang and how much better most of the new songs sounded live. It was great that they played both "Rock Candy" and "Make It Last" off the 1st Montrose album and they actually dropped "Jump" from the encore by this point in the tour.

After the show, I was thinking the band has a lot of potential to still be great but the following 2 year gap until OU812 and it's mediocrity resulted in my further decline in interest in Van Halen and the first (and only) time I would completely skip one of their tours.

5150 tour was not only my first VH show, it was my first concert ever so it'll always rank high in my list of shows I've ever attended.

Love the 5150 album too, like BTTB said, it came out at that time that was right in the wheelhouse. Great times

That's a nice article on UCR. I like that website.

For the VHND, I wrote an article about the first show with Sammy that included a lot more details, including everything he said about it in his book, some exclusive quotes I got from him, more details leading up to the first gig, and a photo of Eddie from that very show. A good read!:

To this day I still like the live versions of 5150 and BOBW from this tour on LWAN. The solo for 5150 is killer and the intro for BOBW was great

For the change they all undertook, a killer show all the way around

5150 is one of the greatest VH and rock albums ever, for me. I was a Sam fan before he joined VH and loved the way he tore up a live show. When I caught my first live glimpse of Van Hagar in Louisville, I hit hyper-drive. I'd never seen Van Halen like this and it blew me away. To see Sammy and Eddie playing guitar together gave me chills. One Way to a Rock became an official Van Halen tune as far as I am concerned. Yeah, it happened.
