I voted for shits and giggles, because it is so subjective I really don't care. But for the record, I voted for the Eagles.

It was greatest American band, not hard rock band, so I voted for them.

Not sure how Metallica isn't on that list, they should be before Motley Crue.
Taylor Swift is nice to look at. Adele can sing.

Emperor Brett - "I can't believe you guys are analyzing song-by-song Van Halen III? What next, analyzing the script of Stroker Ace looking for some shred of Citizen Kane?"

David Lee Roth did the impossible. He made Van Halen better. Deal with it!

    Preferred pronouns: he/him/his

Between 1978-1985, Van Halen was WITHOUT A DOUBT America's greatest rock band. With Sammy, they were ONE of America's greatest rock bands.

To me, if you just go by their legacy, and how much they influenced other bands they are still the greatest American rock band of all time.
VH along with The Beatles, Zeppelin. The Who and probably the Stones are the most influential bands ever as well as just pure musical talent. Those bands are usually the most mentioned when you see other rock artists say who were their biggest influences. You could probably throw Cream in that group too, but that comes mostly from guitarists and drummers.
'Old Van Halen, when I was in it-classic Van Halen-makes you wanna drink, dance and screw, right? And the new Van Halen encourages you to drink milk, drive a Nissan and have a relationship.' - David Lee Roth.

"I could call it anything, but the only word I can think of is Brown. It's just a warm sound. Warm, big, majestic" - Eddie Van Halen on his Tone

"Van Halen is definitely a ladies band, and Ive got the Polaroids to prove it". - David Lee Roth

WOLFGANG did the IMPOSSIBLE, he brought back VAN HALEN, DEAL WITH IT.

The Band is the greatest "American" band... but I voted for Eagles since The Band isn't on there.

I voted Van Halen, but I really wanted to vote for Morris Day and The Time.

I almost voted for Cheap Trick for Bun E. Carlos alone.

But seriously, in terms of band, as in musicians, Ed, Al, and Mike did it better than anybody, hands down. That's the only VH musical configuration I'll ever pay cash money to see ever again, no matter who sings.

Ed, Al, and Mike. Greatest American Band ever.

No Beach Boys on the list, so I voted, with my heart, for VH.

    No shit!

How can they forget the BB's?

Can't get more American then them.

I once called a classic rock station and asked them why they never played The Beach Boys but always played The Beatles. Considering, that the two bands were an influence on each other. The DJ was sympathetic but told me "the BB's aren't really viewed as a rock band" in the same way as the Beatles.

I would disagree, especially their output of the early to mid seventies.

ZZ Top and The Allman Brothers should always be considered with these lists.

Somewhat interesting to notice how many of the same bands are considered as the best from over thirty years ago. Not much has changed. Here is a readers poll from Creem magazine in 1979.
