The original MXR Phase 90 . Orange pedal with the script logo . I believe they only ran on 9V batteries ... The newer ones (reissues) have the block logo , and an AC adaptor jack as a power option . It's a more pronounced phase tone but still a very musical and usable sound .

    Hope this helps ! Cheers

MXR makes a custom shop version of the Phase 90 that's true to spec of the 1974 version. Handwired, same components, etc. That's the one that you can only run on batteries and has no LED. I've got it and its great. I modded mine to use a 9V jack and have an indicator LED though.

    You're welcome .
Allow me to add this ; on a newer Phase 90 , a great way to approximate the VH 1 tone is to turn the knob to zero . As slow a phase setting as possible .

On on original MXR pedal , the 'rate' knob should be set at about 25% . That's even the suggestion given in the instruction book for the EVH signature pedal , when in script mode .

In both cases , the phaser should be placed before the gain stage of the amp/pedal distortion takes place . That's also how Eddie placed his flanger in the signal chain . ie: guitar > phaser > flanger > delay/Echoplex > amp .

I had an EVH phase 90 and sold it for a ZW Phase 90...I love the ZW because it was a limited run and he's my man, but the EVH was much better

funny that now EVH doesn't use the 'script' mode.

Yes. I have a 1974 scipt logo, "Bud" box Phase 90 that I bought in a pawn shop in 1987 for $20. Now they run about $300, but to be honest, it is THE Van Halen phase sound...EXACTLY. If you really want the right sound and the exact same phaser that Eddie used, then by all means get an original vintage script logo MXR Phase 90.

I have the newer script logo model that has an adaptor jack and it sounds awesome at 9 o'clock. I'm playing Atomic Punk at a gig on Fri. and I can't wait to get a video of it.

I have the newer phase 90 that I did the R28 mod to. It sounds exactly like the script one. I really didn't like it before I did the mod.

The Chinese Joyo Vintage Phase is a surprisingly good phaser and is dirt cheap. With the dial at 0 it gets me Ed's phase tone.

From what I understand the ZW Phase 90 is just a block logo Phase 90 with a ZW paint job.
