    Default Unchained vs Barracuda

    http://ultimateclassicrock.com/uncha...-riff-madness/

Van Halen‘s ‘Unchained’ is lined up against Heart ‘s ‘Barracuda’ in round one of Ultimate Classic Rock’s March Riff Madness
    competition.
With much difficulty, we selected 32 of classic rock’s most iconic riffs and paired them off in 16 first-round duels. Over the next five weeks the field will be repeatedly cut in half by your votes, until we theoretically arrive at the most awesome riff in all of rock history.
As you can imagine, choosing just one Eddie Van Halen riff from his vast catalog was one of the hardest parts of this process.
Ultimately, we went with this hard-charging, flanger-utilizing scorcher from 1981′s ‘Fair Warning,’ which the group frequently uses to open their shows.
They’ll be up against some fierce, sharp-toothed competition in the form of Heart’s ‘Barracuda,’ a hard charging riff that kicks off the group’s beloved 1977 album ‘Little Queen.’ (If you were wondering — yes, a good portion of the office lobbied hard for ‘Crazy on You’ to represent the Wilson sisters instead.)
So which of these rock legends do you think deserves to move on? You can vote once per hour until round one of our March Riff Madness voting closes on Sunday, March 9 at 11:59PM ET. The ultimate winner will be revealed on April 7.

One more poll. Hard to decide, Barracuda has a killer riff. Slight edge for Unchained, though. A close call for me.

Rocky Candy is the nastiest riff on the list followed by Unchained and One Way to Rock, for me.

The opening riff of unchained is the greatest thing I've ever heard! Not even close!

I'd never even heard Barracuda until I clicked the link! It's a ridiculous shoot-out IMHO, that riff's not even within a light year of Unchained's ball park. Unbelievably though, it's winning in the poll. Eh?!

I used to really be into Thrash as a kid and never lost my love for Megadeth, Exodus etc. Some of the most brutal riffs in that genre but NO riff surpasses Unchained imo. I would have given my left nut, to hear that riff live, on the FW tour.

I live in the UK - I have scant knowledge of Heart or any of their music. They certainly haven't had many hits over here. These Dreams (if that's the title) may be the only one.

Van Halen and The Police are the two rock bands I obsess over, and beyond that, I'm more into jazz of the likes of Return To Forever, Al di Meola etc. What's obvious to one man isn't necessarily so to another!

    "Alone"?!?

    "Who Will You Run to"?!?

They were BIG hits for Heart over here in the 80s..."Barracuda", you're right; it's pretty obscure on this side of the pond. I think I may have heard it once on a TV advertisement, although I'm not sure...

This same topic was started in the VH Fans Meeting Place forum the other day .
    Merge the two threads ?

Any-hooo , I've always liked Heart . They were a really good band and had very melodic songs . They have always been a favorite of mine .

"Bad Animals" - a great album, and for Pat's benefit, it reached #7 on the UK charts in 1985, and included 3 top 40 singles! (Not "Barracuda", though...)

If Barracuda wins, it will because it is the more popular song. Over the last 30 years I've heard Barracuda on the radio at least ten times more than Unchained. To you and me, Unchained is iconic; most of the rest of the population, though, even those in their 40s and 50s, have no idea that Unchained exists. Because this is a specialty publication, however, Unchained has a shot.

You're absolutely right, Uncle C. I've NEVER heard "Unchained" on the radio - or TV - over here.

There are a lot of good Heart songs, I like Heart. Barracuda is a more well-known song that's why it's winning.
