Default Sucker in a Three Piece

The Van Hagar era is often lauded or ridiculed for it's keyboard-driven hits and ballads, but this era also turned out some awesome rockers. I believe Sucker in a Three Piece is one of those rockers, and an underrated one at that. The song translates well live. Eddie rocks it out in this video.

It's another one of those inconvenient songs for some, that prove VH with Sam, rocked just as hard as CVH. Albeit, not in the exact same way mind you, but rocked HARD, nonetheless.

Like too many songs from that era it this song never really got it's due I think because the lyrics are weak. But from a guitar standpoint it's a grossly underrated song. There's some really cool stuff going on in this song.

    Agreed.

Great song musically, and Sam wails at the mic as usual, but the lyrics are so juvenile they are laughable.

    She's so fine, how about a 9 on a 10 scale
With long legs straight on up to her lunch pail
    Sweet little wishbone, oh yeah
Don't wanna break her in half
Lick up one side and down the other
    Always makes her laugh

She take me down, down, down to the bottom
    I got everything you wanted
    Give you everything you need
Still you want that sugar daddy over me

She want a sucker, sucker in a 3 piece
A sucker all dressed up in a 3 piece suit

I'm on fire with just one look
Got me a brand new number
    In my little black book
But she don't like the way I dress
She don't like the way I wear my hair
But when I roll you over baby, you don't care

Just take me down, down, down, down to the bottom
    Give me everything I want
    Give me everything I need
You don't want that sugar daddy, not over me

She want a sucker, sucker in a 3 piece
A sucker all dressed up in a 3 piece suit

Oh say it isn't so, baby
    You wanna sucker
    He's just a sucker
    He's just a sucker
Look at all that money, baby
    Ya know your sugar daddy
    You're a sugar mama
You're both a bunch of suckers

Oh how he got a big ole belly
    A stone bald head
    Now, listen here, honey
That ain't down your alley, no

    He's just a sucker in a 3 piece
Sucker in a 3 piece suit
    Sucker
    Stone cold, sugar daddy
Sucker, sucker all dressed up in a 3 piece suit

I said, "Go ahead and suck it all up"
Right down to the last drop

I can't imagine why Ed started having problems with his lyrics, especially as they got older.
Taylor Swift is nice to look at. Adele can sing.

Emperor Brett - "I can't believe you guys are analyzing song-by-song Van Halen III? What next, analyzing the script of Stroker Ace looking for some shred of Citizen Kane?"

I really wish Sammy had written more song lyrics like Bruce Hornsby, as I believe that would have pleased the crowd here.

Here's a sample of what it may have been like...

"I'm a better frontman than Dave. That's just the way it is. Somethings will never change."

sometimes I like this song, others I think it's terrible.

it's one of the only vh songs I go back and forth on so much.

I don't like the breakdown at all for some reason.

I think it was super rushed (which the band says they had to do to finish the record before the MOR tour) and I think this is the song that suffered.

Amen to that ! The Sam era material had a lot of diversity , musicianship , and humor . Those traits were well known and celebrated when performed by the original lineup . I truly don't understand the negative bias towards the years post 1985 ... Those that choose to snub or ignore it are missing out on some very cool music IMO .

LOTS of the Sam era stuff had great guitar moments !
The oft repeated comments about Eddie "being on autopilot" etc. just show a preteen mentality . And for the record - I LOVE the original era of the band . Some refer to it as the 'classic' era . Well for my money , VH also had a lot of 'classic' material after Dave left !

This is one of the many "deep cuts" from the years with Sammy . Too many people (IMO) focus on the songs like WCTBL , Dreams , or Feels So Good , etc. as a justification to bash VH during those years .

I like ALL of those songs for different reasons , just as I cherish the entire catalog w/Dave for the same thrill it gives me . There are some mean sounding rockers on those albums w/Hagar . I just can't draw a line in the sand like so many others do . It's all Van Halen to me , and I wouldn't trade it for the world !!!

I don't mind it. I used to play air-guitar too it when I first bought the album in '88. Not as good as "Black and Blue" and "A.F.U" but still a decent rocker

Funny thing about this song is that when I first heard it the day it came out I remember my initial reaction being that they were just fucking around. It's the last song on the album and the lyrics are so dumb that I always thought of it as a joke throw in.

Wouldn't surprise me, they might have said to themselves something like "we always get accused by the critics about writing nothing but sex and car songs, so fuck it, let's give them the dumbest damn song we can write."

I do love the way this one starts out. The pulsating tribal drum beat sort of reminds me of the intro to " EWS ", then EVH's scorching vitrolic raunchy guitar riffs kick in and scream into overdrive. It is a heavenly slice of ear blistering mayhem. This could very well be one of the closest things they'd done in style to the original band.

Dan Hedges " Eddie Van Halen " paperback book from 1985 states it as being one of the tunes they worked on before DLR split. ( As well as Summer Nights, and Good Enough. )

Ran across an old Micheal Anthony interview where he also mentioned it.

    http://www.prthatrocks.com/interviews/michael.html

Christopher: 5150? The beginning of the Hagar Years.

Michael: Man. It was a brand new band. It was at the time we had fired our manager and Roth had just left the band. Ed had the music for Sucker in a Three Piece, and a couple of other songs but Alex and I were all of a sudden sitting around, looking at each other going (flips an index finger rapidly over his lips and makes a bee-de-bee-de-bee-de sound. Laughs.) I'm thinking, 'Well, this is it. The dream is over.' But, Ed had an idea to bring in different singers to sing different tracks and then Sammy's name came up. Of course we knew who Sammy was because he had played with Van Halen on a bunch of shows. He came down to the studio to jam with us, he listened to what we were playing, sang and, man... Our jaws just hit the floor. I still have the cassette from our very first jam session with Sammy. It was great. The energy level was tremendous.
" On a scale that ranges from deep dark depression to rip roaring fun ... most people idle between pissed off ...and not too pissed off " DLR 1997

Good Enough, Get Up, 5150, AFU, Sucker in a 3-Piece, Judgement Day, Pleasure Dome, In and Out, Dream is Over, Seventh Seal, Aftershock.

To me, these songs are as hard or harder than anything with Dave. The keyboard argument is so stale.
