Mom Hospitalized After Driving With Kids Into Ocean

A man who helped rescue the family said the children were screaming in the van, saying their mom was trying to kill them.

    http://www.wesh.com/news/central-flo...2#mid=18511854

Three children were rescued from a minivan that plowed into the ocean at a Florida beach with their mother at the wheel.

A man who helped rescue the mother and children told WESH, the NBC affiliate in Orlando, that the pregnant mother made a hard turn into the ocean north of the Silver Beach approach in Daytona Beach Tuesday afternoon.

Tim Tesseneer told WESH the children were screaming inside the van, saying their mom was trying to kill them.

“The two in the back seat was crying, with their arms out, saying, ‘Our mommy’s trying to kill us. Please help,’” Tesseneer told WESH.

Video footage shows waves crashing against the van, which appeared to be stuck in the water close to shore. Rescuers can be seen helping the passengers out through the back of the van as it rocked in the water.

The older children told the rescuers there was a baby inside while the mother remained silent, rescuers told WESH.

"The kids are like, 'No there's a baby. There's a baby,'" Tesseneer said. "She (the mother) wouldn't say a word. She didn't tell us nothing about a baby."

The mother, who walked away from the van before the younger child was removed, has been admitted to a local hospital for a mental health examination, according to the station.

The children, ages 3, 9 and 10, were taken to Halifax Health Medical Center for treatment. Their vehicle was towed.

Beach Safety Capt. Tammy Marris said authorities are investigating the incident.

I think you're relatively safe with that guess.

I believe the woman was currently pregnant and that her youngest child was 3, the other two being 9 and 10 so it wasn't post partum and I don't think I've heard pregnancy hormones causing that kind of reaction.

DB news journal said the mother was rather out of it and witnesses said she took a deliberate 90 degree turn in the surf

They can and do. It's called puerperal psychosis. And it's a horrible, horrible condition, brought entirely about by the brain's reaction to pregnancy hormones.

puerperal psychosis is the technical name for post partum psychosis

I have never heard of pregnancy hormones causing psychosis during the pregnancy, but I have heard of a few women who were already diagnosed with a mental disorder who became worse during pregnancy,,,,in a couple of cases because the women went off their medications due to their fear of damaging the baby.

maybe that is the case here.

Every time i read stories like this I tend to first feel compassion for the woman which is weird because if that was a guy I'd want him introduced to a firing squad. Maybe it's just seeing how a woman's mood and personality can change so dramatically during and after pregnancy, I don't know.

It is also the name they give to the rare cases where pregnancy hormones result in severe mania during the gestation period - rather than refer to it as post-natal, or post-partum depression, both of which terms would be inaccurate.

You're right in that it most often applies to women who have had psychotic episodes before getting pregnant, and whose symptoms worsen during the period. However, in some instances, women who have never experienced any mental health issues prior to pregnancy can suffer with the condition - although, it isn't anywhere near as common as the post-natal variety, which is why you may not have heard of it.

I hadn't heard of it either - until I actually had it myself. I'd never had any mental health issues in my life; in fact I was robustly healthy physically and mentally, and completely unprepared for how being pregnant would almost ruin, in fact, almost end, both my and my son's lives.

It started with the on-set of 'hyperemesis gravidarum', or constant, 24 hour sickness. Basically, this resulted in my brain being starved of both essential nutrients, water, and sleep. At one point, I literally didn't have one wink of sleep in EIGHT days, and I lost over 30 pounds in weight within 10 weeks. Combine all of that with the anxieties that any first-time mother experiences, and the massive influx of hormones, and you have a recipe for disaster: I went stark, staring, mad.

I developed agoraphobia, crippling obsessive thoughts and behaviour, paranoia, hallucinations, and was in constant terror - made all the worse by the knowledge that I was losing my mind, and couldn't do anything about it. After going 12 weeks without any medical intervention (for fear of harming my unborn baby), I finally had no option; I'd tried to kill myself at least twice by then - because I truly didn't know, or have any real control over what I was doing or thinking. Despite that, I still experience terrible feelings of guilt at the thought of what I almost did.

Medication, an emergency caesarean, psychotherapy, vital nutrient replacement, no more kids, and several YEARS later, I finally recovered. I now try to raise awareness of the condition, because most people have absolutely no idea it can happen. You don't even have to be a first-time Mum; it can strike during any pregnancy - fortunately it's rare, but it definitely belies the myth that all women 'bloom' during that period.

Dibs, great post. And I'm sorry for what you had to go through. But, fortunately, everything turned out ok.

Regarding this woman, are you guys saying that this just came on instantly? One would think there would be signs leading up to her driving a minivan full of kids into the fuckin' ocean. Pardon my English.

    Thanks, Jimmy!

In answer to your question, yes, it can come on with a frightening rapidity and be completely out of the blue. Or, she may, as Daisy inferred, already have had mental health issues which escalated suddenly, perhaps exhibiting some warning signs which people, unaware of the condition, may not have taken too seriously; it's very difficult to determine, but from what I've heard on last night's TV news, she is now undergoing emergency psychological intervention, thank goodness. One can but hope that the children involved are also having counselling to deal with the trauma.

Here's a bit more info to pin to the armchairs.

Mom who drove van into ocean talked about demons hours before, family says

EDIT: Oh! I see this link was included in the OP.

Sounds more like a desperate woman in fear of her and her kids lives and maybe pushed to the edge of sanity by her estranged husband. Carry on Dr. Linkers.

It's never too late to speculate, 47.

Or maybe you're just 'channelling' one of my favourite films from the late 1960s?

You'll have to forgive me, friends, but I'm having a hard time generating as much sympathy for this woman as you fine people. Right now, I'll only reserve my sympathies for those poor children.

I don't know the entire situation regarding the woman's personal life or her mental health. Apparently there is an abusive husband/father and it was too much for her, and it literally drove her to this? So now those kids have an abusive mother as well.
