Default 16 years since "Without you" was released!! What were/are your opinions of it?

Very hard to believe its 16 years (this week) when "Without you" came out. I cant remember the actual date of release, but the video aired on MTV on the 2nd of march...
I gotta admit, at the time I was anxiouisly waiting for the new single and album, just as much as I was with any VH album in previous years....but I was still bummed out that Sammy was gone.
VH had to deliver without Sammy. That's what I was wanting.
What did I think first listen??? I thought it was ok, but nothing like the VH I knew....
I thought the harmonys at the end were brilliant (and still do) but I was more anticipated for the album release 3 weeks later.
Honestly I was just happy at this time that I purchased my very first tickets to see VH in Sydney and Melbourne, and then a week later Sammys tickets went on sale........that part was like a dream come true....
But back to "Without you", what was everyones honest opinion of it when it first came out?
Did you like or love it first?
Did you hate it first then it grew on you?
or did you hate it and still hate it?

In a nutshell, I thought it was ok, but I was expecting a lot more at that point.

I bought the album the day it was released. I worked on Cap. Hill and took the Metro to Pentagon City at lunch to buy it. I got back to the office and threw it in a co-worker's boom box. I wasn't in love with WY. I liked the chords before solo and that was about it. It really reminded me of Extreme's Rest in Peace. I don't have it on my iPhone, so I haven't heard it in many, many year. But I still listen to One I Want and Fire in the Hole all the time. Loved that tour though. Unreal.

The tour was brilliant. I didn't like Garys stage dress, but the setlist was a given at that point. I loved how "Unchained" opened it, and we got the likes of "Romeo delight" back. Just amazing times.

One of my faves off the album. Sounded so much better live.
Setlist from that tour was great!

I was surprised at how much I liked it. I was also surprised at how much I didn't like the rest of the CD.

It has stood the test of time fairly well, too bad it doesn't fit anywhere in the VH catalog.

I thought "Without You" was okay. I pretty much hated the rest of the album, except for "Fire In The Hole". Nothing has really changed in the last 16 years.

Don't like the song, hate the album, loved the tour.
Taylor Swift is nice to look at. Adele can sing.

In the radio commercial promoting the new record, they played a brief clip of the chorus and I was excited, it sounded good.

Unfortunately, that little clip was the only good part of the entire album for me.

Don't like the song, hate the album and didn't go to the tour.

I remember really liking some of the guitar licks around the start of the solo.

I also remember liking the end and the ride out jam

not much more than that. Mike is missed alot here, why they chose to ignore his backing vocals is beyond me (I know EVH wasn't a big mike fan at the time but it's still strange to ignore what he brought to the table).

gotta listen to it again to be honest.

My reaction: disbelief. I could not fathom how a band that stood on top of the world (pun intended) just two years prior had made such a joke of themselves. I have nothing against Gary and I do not blame him, but Van Halen's image was forever tarnished by this era.

A lot of folks laud the III tour as being awesome, but it was just awesome to hear Eddie and the band play some of the classic stuff we hadn't heard in years. The truth is, the band did not sound any better than '93 or '95. I respect Gary, but it looked like a hybrid of Queen and Van Halen on stage--that is just not Van Halen. (BTW, I like Queen and think Freddie Mercury is one of the all time great frontmen live.).

The album sucked, the tour bombed, and Van Halen became a travesty until 2007.

I do remember when the single was released in japan a few days before it hit the states and the B-side was Ballot or the Bullet and people on the VHML who were over there were saying how this was finally van halen back and rockin' like the old days.

I tend to agree with Redfoot on this one....everything about III was pretty much a gigantic failure.

Some of the riffs are so f'n cool but the songs don't hold up.

it really is a shame cause Sammy's lyrics on MTM are great and it would have been really, really cool to hear them work some of this stuff up but whatever...it is what it is.

I just listened to it for the first time start to finish since it came out. My reaction is the same.....what the fuck?? Nothing about it then or now says "Van Halen". It sucks.
