Default The real reason VH released LRHRN (must-read)

    Hi everyone,

I'm excited about this. It's the new ‘Live: Right Here, Right Now' page on VHND.com. It features pretty much all the info known on the album, including something I'm pretty sure that 99% of people haven't heard about(?). It's the main reason the band decided to release a live album at that time. And it involves David Lee Roth!

Details: Exclusive: The Truth Behind Why ‘Live: Right Here, Right Now’ Was Released!

I'm curious - has anyone heard about the DLR factor in this decision before?

    Hope you enjoy the article.

By the way, the live album was released 21 years ago today! (Feb 23rd, 1993).

    Thanks Jeff!

this was the 2nd vh album I bought. I had owned the greatest hits from 96, but I always love live albums so I bought this one next. I wore this CD out and listened to it constantly. Listening back to it these days it's fairly obvious it's largely a studio creation which is a massive shame. Considering how fantastic this band was at the time. But still a great bunch of tunes none the less. I never noticed that the video is mostly tunes from F.U.C.K as well! bizarre!

How would David Lee Roth have any leverage at all at that stage in his career to "force" a greatest hits album out of Warner Bros? I'm not trying to deny it didn't happen that way but just curious as to how.

If it truly did happen that way, Dave probably upset the apple cart enough to cause at least some doubts within Warner Bros and perhaps even within Van Halen themselves even before Leffler passed away.

I've never heard of an artist suing a record company for NOT releasing a Greatest Hits record. I'm wondering if there's any legal basis for this. It's hard to understand.

Very interesting. I'd wager the completely non-live songs from the album are:

    Ain't Talkin' 'Bout Love
    Dreams
    Love Walks In
    Won't Get Fooled Again

...because they didn't play them on that tour. I never thought any of it was pulled from '86 or '88-'89 because they clearly had a different sound in '91-'92 and the whole thing sounded like that era. The b-side "Mine All Mine" was from '88 though. Actually I think it was from the '89 Tokyo show if I remember correctly. I'd have to listen to it again.

I'd never heard about Dave's involvement, but did know Warner wanted the greatest hits. I still got the metal edge interview where it was either a best of or a live album. They always claimed they sounded so good it was the perfect time to release it and cause it was the 15th anniversary of the first album.
I know it was all touched up in the studio (what live album is'nt ) and there were a cuppla tracks not even played on tour, but to me its a great album, and holds fantastic memories on day of release. 1993 was my fave VH year

I thought Live: Right Here, Right Now was alright, nothing more. I would have preferred more tracks from the earlier years. It could have been far better than it was.

I don't recall ever hearing rumours of a DLR era best of being floated around that time. That came much later...

It does seem odd Dave had so much influence on Warner Bros at that stage, as A Little Ain't Enough though a decent album, didn't set the world alight. For his next release, he'd been switched to the Reprise label.

    Interesting read though.
“And what we have at our fingertips is arguably one of the greatest high tenor voices ever – that was in Michael Anthony. In our tiny little corner of the universe, that voice is as identifiable as the high voice in Earth, Wind & Fire, as identifiable as the high voice in the Beach Boys. Van Halen is an indelicate house blend of both – that’s intentionally. So I would always look forward to that reunion.” - David Lee Roth

For all his bravado over the years, DLR is just as insecure as anybody else. That was a total act of desperation to try and sue the record company to release a Greatest Hits album. What's even worse, is he wanted inclusion of HIS solo material on a VH record!

Even though Dave's solo songs were huge in the '80s, that inclusion clause was definitely odd.

More proof that there is no such thing as a "live album". I thought it was interesting that Alex never wanted a live album because Led Zeppelin never did one. Man, he really is a Zep fanatic.

    Hmm... that is interesting.

The only time I've seen this happen was when Sting mixed his hits with Police hits

Of course having the same manager meant it benifted both acts AND the manager.
