Default Sammy was putting on a "brave face" throughout 94/95....

I say this, cause I've been going through old mags, cuttings I've collected through the years since '86. Around 94' while he was promoting "Unboxed" he seemed to be not the same Sam. To me, he was coming across as being a bit insecure, unsettled and trying to be a bit "careful" in interviews. One from "Raw" (A Uk mag) he says "If I quit the band tomorrow, Roth would never come back". It was kinda like he was saying his time in VH was on "Life support", and there were a cuppla other interviews he mentions either quitting or he cant cut it no more.
I know its been said before that the safety net had split after Ed Leffler died, I've always said too "Balance" was like a bonus album, and we are lucky it happened. I've seen interviews too (like Holland and Pensacoula) where they were comfy as ever with each other, but you could sense (more so now) than then there was something wrong in the VH camp.
Sad too, cause I thought Sammys writing was improving a hell of a lot.......what could've been if everything was perfect. I would've loved to hear the floow up to "Balance". Sammy said on aussie tv in 99 that he wanted to make VH's version of a "Seargant peppers..." type album. Oh well, pipe dreams...

'98 sorry on tv. It was Good morning with Bert Newton and it was one of his best interviews.

Yeah, "Balance" Vs. "Sgt. Pepper"...close, but no cigar.

True. The music itself on Balance is far more genius.

No please, get going on The Beatles. Especially in comparison to Van Hagar, cuz that would make it even more interesting.

    5150 vs. Revolver
    F.U.C.K vs. Abbey Road
    Balance vs. Sgt. Pepper

    Take it away, Double Down!

And for bonus points, (EVH's pet project) Private Life vs. Badfinger (Paul McCartney's)

Artists, especially rock artists, always cite Sgt Pepper as the benchmark. Pepper is seen as being perfect, as far as lyrics, the music, and innovative techniques employed during the recording. It's considered the greatest rock album of all time. Sam was saying he wanted an album like that.

The phrase often used is 'magnum opus' - the piece of work that is universally considered an artist's most important (and by "universally", we mean the artist him / herself, critics, and the public in general).

I guess their "Sgt. Pepper" was right around the corner, they were right on the cusp!

I think of it like "they didn't lose the game, they just ran out of time".

Van Halen's Sgt. Pepper was recorded in 1981....
If you have nothing nice to say about Eddie Van Halen, you're at the right website. - Me (A few years ago)

"People take Van Halen much more seriously than we do" - David Lee Roth (1980's)

"I don't sit on the end of your bed while you're trying to make a living" - David Lee Roth (1988)

"For some reason people love to complain about everything. The internet has made it easy for people to do that. Shut the fuck up and get a life, or show me how good you can do it."- Edward Van Halen

"A lot of people ask me which Van Halen singer was better. You can't compare them. It's like asking which guitarist is better. Nobody is better than anybody. Every player is their own person."-Edward Van Halen

"I do like Eddie Van Halen as a player. He gets it right quite often." -Paul McCartney

No, you have to assume Sam meant it in the worst, most egotistical way possible or you have your VH Links privileges revoked.
Taylor Swift is nice to look at. Adele can sing.

Emperor Brett - "I can't believe you guys are analyzing song-by-song Van Halen III? What next, analyzing the script of Stroker Ace looking for some shred of Citizen Kane?"

David Lee Roth did the impossible. He made Van Halen better. Deal with it!

Sam knew things with the band were bad a few months after Lefler died. Be it the Ray Daniels ordeal or something else, everything seemed to change after he passed away. I'm sure there were some problems prior to this-which sam talks about in his book-but nothing that couldn't be overlooked. I honestly think they were good buddies until lefler died.

All you really have to do is watch any interview with the band from the RHRN tour and then contrast it with any interview with the band in 95. Night and day.
