Default "Looking back" - Geffen best of from '86, anyone have it??

I was going through my full VH/Sammy vinyl collection today and came across "Looking back" (a compilation from 86). its bassicly "Unboxed" but without the 2 new songs.
What I find baffling about it, is that its on the Geffen label and is using Pics of Sammy from the "5150" tourbook as the front and back cover.
I thought Sammy only owed Geffen one album after he joined VH. I'm guessing he must of thrown this in aswell just to get some extra bucks.
I've read too that some compilations were down without Sammys knowing, but its strange they are using a pic from the "5150" tourbook. Thoughts??

It sounds like a bootleg to me. Except for the Geffen label part. Perhaps it was added to make it look legit?

it wasn't released in the US. Sam wasn't super duper big in Europe so no one probably gave it any consideration at the time.

almost every compilation from sam's days with capitol are put out with him getting zero money from them, that's part of the deal he signed with them to get out of his capitol deal. you'll see stuff like redhot and rematch or classics mastered that are basically teh same records re-released with different covers...they do this almost every time a new sammy product is put out there so they can cash in.

    Looks like a Japanese import.

    http://www.amazon.com/Looking-Back-I.../dp/B0070AOWMK

Remember, when Sammy signed with Warner Bros. to be in Van Halen he still had a solo contract with Geffen. One of the stipulations at that time was that Geffen shared profits with Warner Bros. for 5150. And thus they may have also had rights to use Sammy's image from that time period and that may be why there are images being used from a Van Halen tourbook. Basically, Geffen lost one of their successful solo artists to a Warner Bros. band and were using the success of 5150 to sell Hagar's solo material overseas. Record companies always throw the possibility of a greatest hits compilations into contracts.

I think every compilation from the Capitol era or that included that era was unofficial (not by him), except:

    All Night Long
    Rematch
    Live 1980
    The Essential Red Collection

And I say "Rematch" (and the re-release "& More") for a few reasons. One, because of the album art. It's different than all the rest and looks like he may have had a hand in it. Two, the fact that it was his first compilation released in the U.S. I'm sure one of the hundreds of greatest hits albums from him and his Capitol days he had something to do with, and my bet is this one. "The Best of Sammy Hagar" (the second one with the trippy album art) seems possible, but I don't think so.

I've got Looking Back, bought in the UK, local record shop used to have a lot of Sammy's stuff so he was obviously very popular here in the North-East UK. They were still stocking Street Machine, Danger Zone, TLB, Hampton and VOA the year that Sammy Hagar/aka I Never Said Goodbye came out - I have one of the LP versions without the INSG name on it.
Over the years I picked up a lot of his stuff in various other shops here, have the full vinyl collection and quite a few other bit, double A side single with Madonna on the flip side, few red vinyl 12" singles, few radio station/promo singles, Dreams cut-out-picture disk, compo's like Red Alert Dial 9... etc etc etc.

This is some, but not all of the Vinyl stuff I have:

I have "Looking Back" - I'm not sure the song list is the same as "Unboxed," though, I think there are differences. For example, I'm pretty sure it has "Remember The Heroes" and "Unboxed" doesn't.

"Remember the Heroes" was good, not great. It wasn't on Unboxed.

"Heroes" is one of the best Sammy songs ever. Maybe if people would've given more credit to his "serious" songs than to his "55"-type songs, he would've written more of them. He's definitely capable of tackling serious topics.

"Remember the Heroes" was co-written with the unfairly often-maligned Jonathan Cain, who also plays keyboards on the recording on Three Lock Box.
