Default The Downtown Sessions - Another Listen

I'm guilty of bagging on Van Halen at times, because I always want more. I think it's time we give them some credit for everything they DID do in 2012. They released a most outstanding comeback album, they released a series of interviews or discussions between Dave, Alex, and Ed....which were very entertaining...and last, but certainly not least, they released the bonus DVD material of the "Downtown Sessions". As if that wasn't enough, they also released the straight to internet acoustic You Really Got Me.

The Downtown Sessions don't get discussed enough in my opinion. Dave appears to be giving it a solid effort, and sounds good throughout most of it. Eddie and Wold are having fun. Alex seems a little bored, but what can you do? I was just watching the DVD over the weekend, and I was really enjoying it. My favorite is Panama. I also like Dave's story about assumptions...about Reggie vs. Michael Jackson.

Again, I ask you if someone told you back in say 2002, 2005, 2006, or even 2010, that in 2012, Van Halen would release a new album, tour, a bonus DVD, and record a bunch of their conversations about the old days, you'd say NO Frickin' Way!

    A little appreciation...you know?

The Downtown Sessions...Painfully bad. Dave sounds like shit, and Eddie proves he's a sub-par acoustic player.

I liked the Downtown Sessions DVD for what it is. Sure, Dave's voice isn't the greatest but these guys made an effort to go above and beyond just releasing a new CD for what was sure to be called by some a "cash grab". They could have but didn't. They showed that they put effort into this. The interviews were great and the dvd as a whole was great. You and Your Blues was my favorite off the disc. I will admit that YRGM is a bit painful to listen to because of Daves vocals but like I said, they made the effort.

I've heard the stuff about Ed's acoustic playing in the past. I'm not a guitar player, but I think it sounds great. What am I not hearing?

I liked the Downtown Sessions bonus material ! Like I said , it was bonus material. The guys didn't have to do that . It was strictly for the fans , IMO .

Eddie's followers have typically thought that he'd play white knuckle "Spanish Fly" sorts of leads in every acoustic situation . That's why (IMO) he gets slammed a bit for his less-than-stellar renditions of those tunes .

    Alex did look bored !
    Dave's stories were a nice treat !
Ed looked like he wasn't relaxed enough , he seemed to be concentrating too hard .
Wolf was just ... there . LOL

You want polished and produced... listen to ADKOT...
You want raw, warts and all... you've got the DVD.

    You get both.
    What's to complain about?

    Thanks VH!

I LOVE ADKOT and the Boston show 2012 was great. Sold out, band was tight and Dave had one of his best nights of the tour. They even played Hang Em High for the first time in 30 years that night. Real treat. Great year to be a VH fan.

The Downtown Sessions dvd missed the mark.

This is the issue. Eddie plays acoustic like an electric.

I had VH on shuffle in the garage this weekend while painting, and a couple of the DT Sessions songs popped up. I was surprised how good they sounded since it's been a while since I listened. Panama is great, I love the little bits Ed added to the tune. I like YAYBs but I don't care for the intro bit (btw Dave stole that story from an old Robin Williams movie -even though he says it's a true story). Beautiful Girls is ok, not really an acoustic song. But I enjoyed hearing them again yesterday.

I did not like the Downtown Sessions. Didn't have much of a problem with Ed's playing, just the rest of it.

I thought it was great to get the bonus material.

I still listen to ADKOT on a regular basis. I listened to The Downtown Sessions once. That was all I needed. I thought it was pretty bad, to the point where I was surprised they released it.

I'm grateful for any bonus material, but I really hope we get something with some substance along with the next album (if the next album happens.) A studio tour, some behind the scenes videos, a look into the song writing process, 5150 rehearsals, anything that offers a sneak peek into the band's working environment. That'd be awesome because we've never had something like this from VH, but I'm not holding my breath for it.

Some bands film themselves in the studio for posterity, as they're recording an album. I wonder if VH ever had cameras rolling. Could you imagine seeing EVH, with headphones on, tearing it up?
